Excerpt from British Birds for Cages, Aviaries, and Exhibition, Vol. 2 The female is not so distinct in general markings and is slightly smaller in size to the practised eye. Habitation. Generally common throughout these Islands, particularly in low-lying districts, and on grass land. I have seen them in very large numbers in Glou'cestershire, Somerset, and Wilts in the fall of the year, on marshy and swampy grounds. Nest and Eggs. The former is generally constructed under the cover of some small bush, or tuft of grass, particularly on low-lying meadows. It is composed of dried grass, with an inner lining of wool or hair. Five eggs are generally the number of the clutch, of a greyish mottled brown colour, the markings apparently covering the whole of the ground colouration. Time: May, June, and July. Excerpt from British Birds for Cages and Aviaries: A Handbook Relating to All British Birds, Which May Be Kept in Confinement "What, another bird-book!" someone may feel tempted to exclaim, on reading the title of the present volume; "surely there are enough of them and to spare." But is that so? When a subject is practically inexhaustible and as yet only its merest outside fringe has been touched upon, it is obvious that there is still something to be said about it, especially as new facts are being noted every day, and discoveries made that were undreamt of even a short time before. Further, there is as much to unlearn as to learn. If history has been built up out of fable, as some assert is the case, much more is this true of Natural History, which is founded, not only on fable, but on ignorance and prejudice as well. Error is tenacious of existence - as hard to kill, indeed as the proverbial cat - and one reason for this is that when the average person has accepted or imagined a mistake, cuddled, petted, and made much of it for years and years not to speak of pledging his credit on its behalf, it takes a good deal of persuading to induce him to cast it adrift and transfer his affections to the truth. Excerpt from British Birds, Vol. 2: June 1908 May 1909 The papers which have appeared in the pages of the volume now completed do not lose, we venture to think, by comparison with the contents of Volume I.; while the increase in the number of contributors may be taken, not only as an indication that british birds justifies its existence, but no less as a sign that the study of our native avifauna is being pursued in a wider, and yet more thorough fashion than heretofore. In the excellent series of articles on Early British Ornithologists and their Works, we have been given a glimpse into the past, for which our readers will, we feel sure, join us in thanking Mr. W. H. Mullens, who has taken infinite pains to give accurate, as well as interesting information. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
