Some Americans who were born and raised during the Great Depression, have passed from this life although many still remain with us. Many famous books, movies and television shows have covered stories from that generation and many of them continue to fascinate the current generations living today (e.g. “The Great Depression” mini series on HBO and “The Walton's” reruns from the 1970s). It was an era before the popularity of television itself and people lived simpler lives and enjoyed the basic pleasures of life such as children playing in the outdoors and families enjoying each others company without the popular electronic distractions we are surrounded by today.People of The Depression Era also experienced many struggles and challenges in life that are not experienced on the same scale by Americans today. Stories of getting by in the face of adversities during The Great Depression and of the bond between family and friends are inspiring and they often demonstrate the triumph of the human spirit and the power of human love. The stories that will be related within the pages of this book include those very attributes and many also simply include the nostalgic memories of an era gone by, through the eyes of the late Glenn Thomas Doyle, as compiled and presented as a collection of short stories, in their original form and language, by his niece, Janice F. Lowrance. It is my sincere hope that I have done justice to the formatting of these wonderful and inspiring related stories from some of the “Good Old Days” of the American experience.-Janice F. From the Pulitzer Prize–winning author of The Good War: A masterpiece of modern journalism and “a huge anthem in praise of the American spirit” (Saturday Review). In this “invaluable record” of one of the most dramatic periods in modern American history, Studs Terkel recaptures the Great Depression of the 1930s in all its complexity. Featuring a mosaic of memories from politicians, businessmen, artists, striking workers, and Okies, from those who were just kids to those who remember losing a fortune, Hard Times is not only a gold mine of information but a fascinating interplay of memory and fact, revealing how the 1929 stock market crash and its repercussions radically changed the lives of a generation. The voices that speak from the pages of this unique book are as timeless as the lessons they impart (The New York Times). “Hard Times doesn’t ‘render’ the time of the depression—it is that time, its lingo, mood, its tragic and hilarious stories.” —Arthur Miller “Wonderful! The American memory, the American way, the American voice. It will resurrect your faith in all of us to read this book.” —Newsweek “Open Studs Terkel’s book to almost any page and rich memories spill out . . . Read a page, any page. Then try to stop.” —The National Observer

Book Summary My desire and intent in writing this book is to capture in print and with photographs; glimpses of my younger years during the great depression and share it with my readers. Being born and raised on a farm in rural Mississippi I strive to share the good and bad times I experienced as a young lad in a time when we had lots of love for family, love and respect for God and Country but precious little financial resources. The book covers a span of time from my early childhood years thru my teenage years. I also want to acquaint the younger generations and others less familiar with the agricultural lifestyle about the tools and practices that were common during the depression years. This background taught me a great deal about the value of hard work, perseverance, the necessity of self-discipline, the value of an education, faith in my Creator and the pleasure experienced by seeing a job well done. My background taught me not only to enjoy the simple pleasure of good fellowship with family, friends and church members; as well as acquaintances in my community. We even shared our meager blessings with the less fortunate of God's children, like hobos who came by looking for food. We also learned to respect and deal with the dangers of infantile paralysis, diphtheria, whooping cough, malaria, measles, mumps, hydrophobia and the hazards prevalent during those times. We learned to love God and Country by our experiences with our church and the Baptist faith. We gained a sense of patriotism and duty to country by witnessing the grief and loss experienced by our friends and neighbors who lost love ones during World War II. These combined experiences shaped my life for all time to come.

Because I was born in 1941, at the very end of the "Great Depression" (1929 -1941), I have no personal memories of the those years. But 65 years later, I can still recall the things my parents told of their lives during those years. The things mom and dad experienced during the "Great Depression" shaped the rest of their lives. They lived according to economic and moral rules that they fashioned for themselves, based on their Depression-era experiences. "Don't buy anything on time; don't pay interest." "Waste not, want not." My mother had ten brothers and sisters. When mom's mother died, the older siblings began to take care of those who were younger. And when the older siblings got old, the younger siblings in turn took care of them.By the time, I decided to write accounts of the "Great Depression," my parents were gone. And then one day, for no special reason, I decided to collect tales of the "Great Depression." The thirty accounts found in this book, are the thirty stories that I like best of the accounts that I have gathered over the last 30 years. This book tells the stories of thirty ordinary Americans who lived through the "Great Depression" (1929 -1941).

This book is an analysis of the causes of the Great Depression of 1929. The author concludes that the Depression was caused not by laissez-faire capitalism, but by government intervention in the economy. The author argues that the Hoover administration violated the tradition of previous American depressions by intervening in an unprecedented way and that the result was a disastrous prolongation of unemployment and depression so that a typical business cycle became a lingering disease.

Twenty years after the end of apartheid, a new generation is building a multiracial democracy in South Africa but remains mired in economic inequality and political conflict. The death of Nelson Mandela in 2013 arrived just short of the twentieth anniversary of South Africa’s first free election, reminding the world of the promise he represented as the nation’s first Black president. Despite significant progress since the early days of this new democracy, frustration is growing as inequalities that once divided the races now grow within them as well. In After Freedom, award-winning sociologist Katherine S. Newman and South African expert Ariane De Lannoy bring alive the voices of the “freedom generation,” who came of age after the end of apartheid. Through the stories of seven ordinary individuals who will inherit the richest, and yet most unequal, country in Africa, Newman and De Lannoy explore how young South Africans, whether Black, White, mixed race, or immigrant, confront the lingering consequences of racial oppression. These intimate portraits illuminate the erosion of old loyalties, the eruption of class divides, and the heated debate over policies designed to redress the evils of apartheid. Even so, the freedom generation remains committed to a united South Africa and is struggling to find its way toward that vision.
