Excerpt from Biographical Sketches of the Bench and Bar, Vol. 1 of 2: Of South Carolina The work was commenced at the suggestion of friends who thought my long acquaintance with the administration of justice, in South Carolina, would enable me to accomplish such a task better than a younger person. Whether this belief was true or not, it induced the author to 'make the attempt. His personal knowledge and recollections are given in the following pages. Excerpt from Biographical Sketches of the Bench and Bar, Vol. 2 of 2: South Carolina In December, 1822, Col. Hayne, who had been by successive promotions, made major-general, was elected Senator in Con gress, beating Judge William Smith by a few votes. This was a great triumph for so young a man to be elected over a veteran in the service of the country. Judge Smith was a Radical, and in favor of Wm. H. Crawford for President. Gen'l. Excerpt from The Bench and Bar of Texas The definition of that intuitive principle or subtle quality of the mind, which we call genius, has never yet been formulated; at least, it has never received an intelligent interpretation among men. Its source lies concealed in the unexplored recesses of human nature; nor is its presence known until, awakened by the touch of opportunity, it bursts from its gyves, and ashes upon the world with a light that illuminates the extending scope of its own vision. But whatever may be the abstract nature of genius, its qualities are readily recognized and its manifestations easily judged. Its course is upward and onward, and its ight is bounded by no definable horizon, while its zenith is hidden somewhere in the realms of eternal and untar hished light.
