The purpose of the present text is to distil the experience of a number of workers active in the field of biochemical education, so providing readable accounts which, it is hoped, will be of significant benefit to those who are new to the teaching profession in addition to those who may be stimulated to experiment with alternative strategies in their own teaching situation. From the various contributions considered in this book, each topic, in its widest sense, would warrant at least a volume on its own and indeed such texts are currently available. However, it was felt more appropriate to restrict the coverage to those aspects which are of particular use to the subject of biochemistry and, for which, work in this area has already achieved some measure of success. In effect what each of us is doing is supplying findings from a body of knowledge collectively called educational technology. Without entering the debate on the semantics of what educational technology is or is not, it doesn't take long to realise that, like the vast majority of subject areas, it has its own unique terminologies and vocabulary. Whilst it is inevitable that such terms will appear throughout the text, hopefully all will be explained on first use and so it is not envisaged that this will be too distractive to the reader.

While the historic roots of clinical chemistry originate from the chemical sciences the growth of the subject has been dependent upon the poli tical, social, economic and technologic national soil in which it has developed. Thus the present leaders in this field have backgrounds variously in chemistry, medicine, pharmacy or sometimes biology. Today, clinical chemistry has attained stature as a unified independent discipline. It is characterized by active and productive international and national societies; its function codified in the law of many countries; its scientific content the sole subject of international and national journals as well as textbooks and educational programs; and its inter national, regional and national meetings have become focal points for major exchange of scientific, clinical and technical information and exhibition. The positive impact of the discipline upon the delivery of health care has given it a significant position in the economics of public health. As a consequence it has become the most rapidly-growing segment of the industrial and commercial component of health main tenance. These changes have brought the need to define the educational and training processes to prepare future leaders of clinical chemistry. The diverse backgrounds of the present directors of clinical chemicallabora tories has required that the viewpoints of chemists, pharmacists, physicians and biologists be brought into harmony. This has been achieved by the years of discussion, debate and review by colleagues of varied professional backgrounds. This monograph reflects their consensus viewpoint for the practice of clinical chemistry at its most advanced level.

The Logic of Biochemical Sequencing examines how to determine the primary structures of proteins and DNA and use them to stimulate the process of logical problem-solving. It concentrates on sequencing work and stresses the thought processes needed to make sense of what might otherwise be indecipherable data. The book also introduces "biocryptography," which serves as a basis for four short stories that use the results of sequence determinations to provide clues to higher order problems. Problems in the book range from elementary to difficult, and solutions to all problems are provided, many of them completely worked out. The book is an excellent supplementary text for students in a full-year biochemistry course, as well as for biochemists and molecular biologists.

Biochemical and Molecular Pharmacology in Drug Discovery comprises fundamental biochemical and molecular aspects of drug discovery and basic understanding of modern drug discovery approaches along with certain key topics related to molecular pharmacology of drugs and therapeutics. Molecular pharmacology has gained significant momentum among researchers, scientists, and academicians because of its increasing interest in drug discovery research across the globe. Molecular pharmacology involves a fundamental understanding of drug actions at the molecular level with the help of several tools and techniques of biochemical and molecular biology. It explains the phenomena of drug-target interactions considering different biochemical systems and cellular strategies. With the advent of technologies, current advances and research trends move toward molecular and/or target-based drug design and discovery. Through this book, readers will be able to gain skills and knowledge with a thorough understanding of the subject of biochemical and molecular pharmacology, in a comprehensive and systematic manner with special reference to recent advances in drug discovery research. Highlights the fundamentals of biochemical and molecular aspects, with reference to drug discovery research Depicts modern drug discovery approaches such as reverse pharmacology, drug repositioning, and CADD in the context of current research updates Summarizes recent developments in the molecular pharmacology of novel drugs/ therapeutic molecules

The inaugural lectures published in this volume reflect the many changes which have taken place in the study of education between the late 1970s and the mid 1980s. Changes in society are reflected in the lectures on special needs education and multicultural education and the contributions of educational administration and comparative educations as a field of study.
