Over the past two decades, there has been a major increase in research into the effects of the arts on health and well-being, alongside developments in practice and policy activities in different countries across the WHO European Region and further afield. This report synthesizes the global evidence on the role of the arts in improving health and well-being, with a specific focus on the WHO European Region. Results from over 3000 studies identified a major role for the arts in the prevention of ill health, promotion of health, and management and treatment of illness across the lifespan. The reviewed evidence included study designs such as uncontrolled pilot studies, case studies, small-scale cross-sectional surveys, nationally representative longitudinal cohort studies, community-wide ethnographies and randomized controlled trials from diverse disciplines. The beneficial impact of the arts could be furthered through acknowledging and acting on the growing evidence base; promoting arts engagement at the individual, local and national levels; and supporting cross-sectoral collaboration.

ABSTRACT: In an attempt to understand the transitional object, it is important to refer to the Object Relations Theory (OR), established by psychologists using the psychoanalytic framework, built upon psychodynamic theory. This research reflects upon the findings of the OR, and the establishment of the transitional object, and its uses. Drawing upon historical content and modern case studies, this research poses the idea that transitional objects are used throughout the lifespan and are successful coping devices from infancy to childhood, and adulthood. Transitional objects have been found to assist in the relief of anxiety and the negative impacts of traumatic events. Art therapy has been used to both create objects of transition and in turn used as a therapeutic object of transition. This research evaluates the prominence of transitional objects throughout the lifespan, and identifies if the use of transitional objects is related to anxiety or coping. This research evaluates how art therapy may be used to both create transitional objects, and how it may be used as a transitional process.

This book investigates how arts-based research methods can positively influence people’s resilience and well-being, particularly in constraining environments. Using examples from arts-based research methods in different contexts and from across the globe, the book brings together a diverse range of perspectives to understand how both resilience and well-being can be supported in a world that is rarely stress free. Collectively they demonstrate how arts-based research methods can: provide agency through the foregrounding of participants’ voices; afford transformational learning opportunities; create opportunities for relationship building; support creativity and new ways of thinking; generate aspirations and hope; encourage forms of communication that expose ideas, emotions and feelings that previously might not have been known or known how to be expressed; and enhance reflection and reflexivity. The authors explore how art-based practices, such as clowning, collage, dramatisation, drawing, painting, role-play and sculpting, can be used to support the resilience and well-being of individuals and groups across the lifespan, and theorize how arts-based research methods can positively contribute to participants’ positive self-esteem, self-image and ability to cope with challenges and new circumstances. Academics, professional learning facilitators, higher education students, and anyone interested in resilience and well-being in the health and education sectors will find this an interesting and engaging text.

This case study examines the use of art therapy as a tool to facilitate conversations about loss throughout the lifespan with an adult with autism. Autism Spectrum Disorder is diagnosed under the category of developmental disabilities, and has increased in prevalence within the past few decades. However, because most research has been directed towards early intervention strategies for children, adults with developmental disabilities have been overlooked, especially with regard to social/emotional support. Of these concerns, death and dying, as well as other types of loss, are under-researched; this is not only because of a general tendency in Western culture to avoid the topic, but also because caregivers assume their person will not understand, and are hesitant to upset them. Additionally, the experience of loss encompasses more than the death of a loved one (e.g., someone moving away, or getting a new job and leaving the company). These smaller losses affect an individual's life more frequently, and often go unacknowledged. In this case study, art therapy sessions were used to facilitate conversations about loss with an adult male who had experienced several losses throughout his lifetime. The eight sessions included two interview sessions to access logistical information and six art making sessions. Topics discussed included the individual's time spent at the organization, people he has interacted with, and the death of his grandparents. The results supported earlier research: that individuals with autism understand and can process the concept of loss, and want to be included in the conversation. However, they may have some challenges communicating their needs to caregivers and other people in their lives. In this study, art therapy served as documentation of an experience discussing important life events, and also provided a starting point for future conversations with caregivers. Future research is this subject area is necessary and should strive to include more sessions, groups of individuals, and expand to non-verbal individuals with autism and other developmental disabilities.

This important new text demonstrates how art therapy can make a major contribution to the treatment of children who are seriously ill, in foster care, physically and emotionally traumatized, as well as deviant and addicted adolescents, young adults, and with the aftermath of a spouse's suicide. The first three chapters of this book set the framework providing established developmental structure, holistic interactions of mind/body and attachment essentials for human beings. In the following chapters authors that are experts in facilitating art as healing with people of different ages and in different settings share their insights, images, and stories about treating developmental issues of angst and trauma. Of special interest are the two chapters on brain development and function, indicating that art therapy can make a major contribution to the healing of trauma because creative activity literally changes the traumatized typography of the brain. Information about the importance of bilateral integration as seen in both Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing (EMDR) and art therapy contributing to healing trauma is discussed. There is a special segment on art therapy and a new approach to the treatment of trauma with a sequence of chapters devoted to the ways art therapy facilitates healing of issues throughout the life span. The Instinctual Trauma Response (ITR) is examined, which resolves the client's trauma without abreaction or re-experiencing the event and without the use of medication. In addition, there is clinical documentation of the successful resolution of different kinds of trauma with a variety of clients at various stages of development. These cases include the trauma of multiple surgeries, family violence, and witness to death. The book concludes with a discussion of how art therapy has helped the elderly and their caretakers deal with issues of Alzheimer's and death. This is a book that contains significant “new” material that is a major contribution to the art therapy field.

Art Therapy and Creative Aging offers an integrated perspective on engaging with older people through the arts. Drawing from the author’s clinical, research and teaching experiences, the book explores how arts engagement can intertwine with and support healthy aging. This book combines analysis of current development theory, existing research on creative programs with elders, and case examples of therapeutic experience to critically examine ageism and demonstrate how art therapy and creative aging approaches can harness our knowledge of the cognitive and emotional development of older adults. Chapters cover consideration of generational, cultural, and historical factors; the creative, cognitive and emotional developmental components of aging; arts and art therapy techniques and methods with older adults with differing needs; and examples of best practices. Creative arts therapists, creative aging professionals, and students who seek foundational concepts and ideas for arts practice with older people will find this book instrumental in developing effective ways of using the arts to promote health and well-being and inspire engagement with this often-underserved population.
