Methods of controlling mass concrete temperatures range from relatively simple to complex and from inexpensive too costly. Depending on a particular situation, it may be advantageous to use one or more methods over others. Based on the author's 50 years of personal experience in designing mass concrete structures, Thermal Stresses and Temperature Control of Mass Concrete provides a clear and rigorous guide to selecting the right techniques to meet project-specific and financial needs. New techniques such as long time superficial thermal insulation, comprehensive temperature control, and MgO self-expansive concrete are introduced.

In each mix, one block was insulated on all six sides to simulate a fully adiabatic process, while the other block was insulated on five of the faces with the top face left open and exposed to environmental conditions. Measurements of the temperature and strain at predetermined locations within the blocks were recorded until the equilibrium temperature was achieved. Using the developed model, a parametric analysis was performed to evaluate the effects of cement heat generation, concrete thermal properties, dimension of concrete structure, insulation of structure, convection of heat, etc. on the temperature distribution and induced stresses in mass concrete structures. Recommendations on methods for evaluating the potential performance of mass concrete structures are presented.

This book provides a State of the Art Report (STAR) produced by RILEM Technical Committee 254-CMS ‘Thermal Cracking of Mas-sive Concrete Structures’. Several recent developments related to the old problem of understanding/predicting stresses originated from the evolution of the hydration of concrete are at the origin of the creation this technical committee. Having identified a lack in the organization of up-to-date scientific and technological knowledge about cracking induced by hydration heat effects, this STAR aims to provide both practitioners and scientists with a deep integrated overview of consolidated knowledge, together with recent developments on this subject.

The purpose of this investigation was to validate the accuracy and effectiveness of the temperature and thermal stress/strain calculation program currently being used by the Corps of Engineers by comparing analytical results with measured data obtained from embedded gages in Dworshak Dam. History of construction, weather data, and available material properties of Dworshak Dam were used for computer program input. Based on the results of this investgation, it can be concluded that the temperature and thermal stress calculation programs currently being used by the Corps are acceptable. Recommendations for further improvement of these computer programs are presented. (Author).

In construction of mass concrete, it is an important thing to estimate thermal stress to protect cracking in concrete before construction, and in that purpose, concrete thermal stress is sometimes analyzed. In young concrete, creep occurs greatly compared with matured concrete. Temperature rise takes place in mass concrete for two days or so after placement, and drops after the temperature peak gradually until it reaches atmosphere temperature. By the restriction from the basement and the shrinkage caused by the temperature drop, thermal stress occurs in mass concrete. In this paper, young concrete creep tests are mentioned, and using the results of the creep test, new creep estimation method is proposed. The proposal consists from creep function modified from CEB-FIP model code 1978. In CEB-FIP Code creep component just after the loading is described by a step function. This step function is modified to be a continuous function of the age of concrete. This modification was done according to the results of creep tests on young concrete test described here. A restriction test which simulated the mass concrete temperature condition and perfect restriction was performed. Simulation analysis is done on the model restriction test, and the result of the analysis agreed well with those of the tests.

This book is trying to help expand the knowledge of fresh concrete workability. Concrete workability depends on lots of parameters and varies significantly with conditional alteration. The temperature is of great importance determining the workability. This book presents theoretical information and experimental discussions investigating the influence of fresh concrete temperature and ingredients on the workability. Programming and different statistical programs are applied to include the most appropriate results. Artificial neural network prediction of workability is investigated in two situations; with and without concrete temperature. The most relevant cutting edge studies on this issue are cited and discussed to support the readers for the future studies.
