Accurate uranium analysis, and particularly for isotope measurements, is essential in many fields, including environmental studies, geology, hydrogeology, the nuclear industry, health physics, and homeland security. Nevertheless, only a few scientific books are dedicated to uranium in general and analytical chemistry aspects in particular. Analytical Chemistry of Uranium: Environmental, Forensic, Nuclear, and Toxicological Applications covers the fascinating advances in the field of analytical chemistry of uranium. Exploring a broad range of topics, the book focuses on the analytical aspects of industrial processes that involve uranium, its presence in the environment, health and biological implications of exposure to uranium compounds, and nuclear forensics. Topics include: Examples of procedures used to characterize uranium in environmental samples of soil, sediments, vegetation, water, and air Analytical methods used to examine the rigorous specifications of uranium and its compounds deployed in the nuclear fuel cycle Health aspects of exposure to uranium and the bioassays used for exposure assessment Up-to-date analytical techniques used in nuclear forensics for safeguards in support of non-proliferation, including single particle characterization Each chapter includes an overview of the topic and several examples to demonstrate the analytical procedures. This is followed by sample preparation, separation and purification techniques where necessary. The book supplies readers with a solid understanding of the analytical chemistry approach used today for characterizing the different facets of uranium, providing a good starting point for further investigation into this important element.

Not illustrated. 1903 edition. Excerpt: ... Carbon dioxide must also be separately determined. The following analyses are of commercial prepared originally by reducing the chloride with potassium, and this process, or some modification of it, was the only one available until a few years ago. Moissan prepared "cast uranium" by submitting an intimate mixture of the oxide and sugar charcoal, contained in a coke crucible, to the electric current. He isolated a crystallized carbide (C3U2) whose melting point is much higher than that of platinum, and he prepared samples of the metal containing less than i per cent, of impurities. On this latter metal and other samples prepared by the electrolysis of the double uranium-sodium chloride (UCl4.2NaCl) he determined some of its properties. Ferro-uranium alloys are formed by the last-mentioned process when iron electrodes are used. The metal and some of its alloys have been prepared by various modified forms of the alumino-thermic process: the author, however, found this method to yield poor and very uncertain results. Pure uranium is a white non-magnetic metal, and can be easily filed; it does not scratch glass, is easily carbonized, and may be tempered. Its specific gravity is said to be about 187, but the carbonized metal usually met with has a specific gravity of about 12 only. When in fine powder the metal burns at a comparatively low tempera ture (170 in pure oxygen), and also very readily combines with nitrogen. It tarnishes on exposure to air, and also decomposes water to some extent, particularly if heated. Metallic uranium is decomposed by dilute hydrochloric acid, but black flocks of carbide persist until a few drops of nitric acid have been added. With ferro-uranium alloys or uranium steels it is advisable to filter off this...

Excerpt from The Analytical Chemistry of Uranium Any one desirous of mastering the practical determination of any metal in its ores and in the commercial products whose value it influences, perhaps could do no better, if immediate results were of no consequence, than to choose a gravimetric and a volumetric process which worked well with pure solutions of the metals salts, and then to set about observing the influence exerted by variations in the mode of operating and by the presence of other metallic salts. Such a procedure, at any rate, usually gives ultimate satisfaction and confidence, and makes valuable additions to ones permanent knowledge of chemical facts, as well as, now and again, eliminates some fictions. Nuclear Techniques in Analytical Chemistry discusses highly sensitive nuclear techniques that determine the micro- and macro-amounts or trace elements of materials. With the increasingly frequent demand for the chemical determination of trace amounts of elements in materials, the analytical chemist had to search for more sensitive methods of analysis. This book accustoms analytical chemists with nuclear techniques that possess the desired sensitivity and applicability at trace levels. The topics covered include safe handling of radioactivity; measurement of natural radioactivity; and neutron activation analysis. The positive ion and gamma ray activation analysis; isotope dilution and tracer investigations of analytical techniques; and geo- and cosmochronology and miscellaneous nuclear techniques are also elaborated in this text. This publication is intended for analytical chemists, but is also valuable to students intending to acquire knowledge on nuclear techniques and analytical methods in chemistry.
