He must explore the heathen mind, search out its hidden passages and cham bers of imagery, remove its accumulated mould, and trace snow on the quick ened conscience the natural law written with the finger of God. In numerous instances he must forge and furbish, at least in this our day, his instruments of labor. He finds, it may be, a people gifted indeed with the power of articulate speech, but having no visible and permanent expression of oral sounds. He must provide an alphabet for them; and he must provide it in circumstances extremely unpropitious.
