By the late 1920s, flight was an everyday part of American life. So much so that the successive federal agencies overseeing U.S. aviation during this period (the Aeronautics Branch of the Department of Commerce, the Bureau of Air Commerce, and the Civil Aeronautics Authority) issued a semimonthly, then monthly publication called the Air Commerce Bulletin to keep aviators and air carriers abreast of the latest rules, regulations, and air industry news. In a May 1932 issue, for example, the bulletin published a rule that pilots must receive a scheduled pilot rating before the year's end, and more than 300 pilots raced to obtain it before the first day of 1933. In June 1938 a summary of "Certificates, Approvals, and Ratings" detailed how many active pilots had certificates of competency and how many letters of approval were issued for airplanes, together with a list of physicians who were no longer conducting physical examinations for the Bureau of Air Commerce. Some issues included a column titled "10 Years Ago This Month," which illustrated just how far aviation had come in a relatively short period of time.
