Many of the chapters in this book are based on expansions of selected presentations from the 8th IEEE International Workshop on Variable Structure Systems VSS'04, which was held in Barcelona, Spain in September 2004. The editors have tried to identify the key contributions from this workshop, which define the state-of-the-art, represent new directions building on existing work, and highlight new emerging application areas.

The last of such a workshop in the 20th Century, this workshop aims not only to summarize the state-of-the-art developments in VSS theory and applications, but also identify new promising directions perceived as being important for VSS in the 21st century. The 20th Century has witnessed the formation and consolidation of VSS theory and its applications. It has also witnessed an emerging trend of cross-fertilization and integration of VSS with other control and non-control areas such as feedback linearization, flatness, passivity based control, adaptive control, system identification, pulse width modulation, Hinf, geometric and algebraic methods, artificial intelligence, modelling and optimisation, neural networks, fuzzy logic, etc. This trend will continue and flourish in the new millennium.Special features of the book include a survey paper entitled “VSS Premise of XX Century: Evidences of a Witness” by the father of VSS theory Professor Vadim Utkin and other articles by many authoritative experts in VSS.

This book comprises a selection of papers that were first presented at VSS98 (5th International Workshop on Variable Structure Systems) held in Sarasota, Florida. This workshop was the fifth in a series of VSS international workshops, and the first to be held in the United States. Work presented herein on theoretical developments and applications on VSS and Sliding Mode, reflects how trends have advanced beyond the original ideas that are now well documented in a number of books and research monographs. In particular, the concepts of Sliding Sector and Second Order Sliding Mode introduced in this volume, will stimulate discussions and invite further extensions. Also, the focus on Sampled Data systems represents a positive trend towards practical industrial implementations of sliding mode controllers.

The seminar for which the proceedings are published here evolved from a cooperative research program on bilinear systems and applications to immunology at the Oregon State University and at the University of Rome. The topics include more general forms of variable structure systems which may be divided into categories of mathematical system theory, economic applications and biological applications. Throughout the seminar there was emphasis on the integration of theory and app- cation. In most cases, theoretical derivations are motivated by their need to solve practical problems. In reading the proceedings, it becomes apparent that bilinear systems, quadratic systems and more general variable structure or adaptive systems become natural models in many cases and excellent approximations in others. It is seen that linear systems have very limited use particularly in economics and biology. Variable structure systems are analyzed in terms of structure, volterra kernels, system modelling, parameter identification,- controllability and Lie algebra to mention a few. Certainly, it ia nbt possible to present a complete tre- ment of these numerous topics, but at the Same time the unifying power of the systems approach and variable structure systems is shown.

This book reflects the latest developments in sliding-mode control (SMC) and variable-structure systems (VSS), comprising contributions by leading researchers and an international range of experts. Such contributions highlight advances in various branches of the field—conventional and higher-order SMC with continuous- and discrete-time implementation and theory and applications both receive attention. The book consists of six parts. In the first, new SMC/VSS algorithms are proposed and their properties are analyzed. The second part focuses on the use of observers to solve the estimation and output-feedback control problems. The third part discusses the discretization aspects of SMC algorithms. Parts IV and V provide important insights on the use of adaptation laws for non-overestimated control gains and chattering alleviation. The last part examines the applications of these SMC/VSS ideas to real-world systems. Sliding-Mode Control and Variable-Structure Systems introduces postgraduates and researchers to the state of the art in the field. It includes theory, methods, and applications relevant to workers in disciplines including control, automation, applied mathematics, electrical and mechanical engineering, instrumentation, electronics, computer science, robotics, transportation, and power engineering. Its clear style and deep exposition help readers to keep in touch with tools that are, thanks to the robustness and insensitivity to perturbations of the SMC/VSS paradigm, among the most efficient for dealing with uncertain systems.
