Addressing the fundamental technologies and theories associated with designing complex communications systems and networks, Principles of Communications Networks and Systems provides models and analytical methods for evaluating their performance. Including both the physical layer (digital transmission and modulation) and networking topics, the quality of service concepts belonging to the different layers of the protocol stack are interrelated to form a comprehensive picture. The book is designed to present the material in an accessible but rigorous manner. It jointly addresses networking and transmission aspects following a unified approach and using a bottom up style of presentation, starting from requirements on transmission links all the way up to the corresponding quality of service at network and application layers. The focus is on presenting the material in an integrated and systematic fashion so that students will have a clear view of all the principal aspects and of how they interconnect with each other. A comprehensive introduction to communications systems and networks, addressing both network and transmission topics Structured for effective learning, with basic principles and technologies being introduced before more advanced ones are explained Features examples of existing systems and recent standards as well as advanced digital modulation techniques such as CDMA and OFDM Contains tools to help the reader in the design and performance analysis of modern communications systems Provides problems at the end of each chapter, with answers on an accompanying website

The symposium on "Worldwide Advances in Communications Networks" which was held on May 14-15, 1992 at GMU was an ambitious attempt to bring together leaders in the communications area to discuss the major issues in this rapidly-changing technology. The symposium was a success and many of the ideas presented at the conference are being implemented. This proceeding contains the majority of the papers presented at the symposium and abstracts of the remainder. The papers may be divided into seven general categories. The first five papers explore some important design issues for high speed networks (gigabit networks). Traffic modelling, quality of service guarantees, switching alternatives, and routing are discussed. The next two papers focus on applications for broadband communications. Weinstein begins by asking, "ARE THERE ANY APPLICATIONS?" and then proceeds to develop a wide variety of potential uses. Personick concentrates on multimedia applications. The next three papers deal with Personal Communications Services (PCS) and the notion of communicating with anyone, at any time, anywhere. Several of the key technical issues such as CDMA vs TDMA are analyzed in detail. The fourth area is satellite communications. Two papers discuss some of the major changes that are taking place and potential new systems. The next two papers discuss signal coding and digital video. Jayant provides an excellent overview of the impressive capabilities that are available for the compression of speech, audio, image, and video signals. Bellisio concentrates on video encoding.

Research in information, communications and signal processing has brought about new services, applications and functions in a large number of fields which include consumer electronics, biomedical devices and defence. These applications play an important role in advancing technologies to enhance human life in general. Recent Advances in Information, Communications and Signal Processing aims to give students, researchers, and engineers information pertaining to recent advances in these fields. In terms of research in signal processing topics, the two chapters included in this book have a strong emphasis on advances in algorithmic development in the biomedical, and human-computer interfaces domain areas. More specifically, the use of deep learning for placental maturity staging is discussed as well as the use of vibration analysis for localising impacts on surfaces for human-computer applications. In terms of communications signal processing, advances in new wireless communication such as NOMA (non-orthogonal multiple access) and millimetre-wave antenna design for 5G cellular mobile radio, as well as innovations in LDPC (low density parity check code) decoding and networking coding, are featured.

The areas of communications, computer networks, and signal processing have undergone rapid development over the past several years. The advent of VLSI circuitry and increasingly sophisticated computer hardware and software techniques have made possible the construction of systems and signal proces sors for· communications applications not contemplated only a short time ago. The increasing complexity of communication systems, both by themselves and in land-based or satellite networks, has created a greater need for finding use ful mathematical techniques for their analysis. The rapidly evolving technolo gies involved continue to find exciting new areas for application, and it remains a challenge for researchers to keep abreast of developments. In this volume researchers from a broad cross section of the areas of communications, signal processing, and computer networks have been invited to contribute articles to assist readers in learning about the current state of research and future research directions in their area. The authors were not given tight guidelines for their contributions and thus the character and emphasis of each chapter differs. Although the scope of the areas considered is necessarily limited in a volume of this size, the coverage here is quite broad and it is hoped that the reader will find the contents of this volume to be interesting, useful, and informative.
