Anna Katharine Green (November 11, 1846 - April 11, 1935) was an American poet and novelist. She was one of the first writers of detective fiction in America and distinguished herself by writing well plotted, legally accurate stories. Green has been called "the mother of the detective novel".AN old crone stood on the top floor of one of New York's studio buildings. In her hand was a letter. Looking at it, she studied the superscription carefully, and then, with the same intentness, read the name on one of the doors before her. Hamilton Degraw was on the one, Hamilton Degraw was on the other. Satisfied, she gave a quick glance around her, thrust the letter under the door, and quickly fled.

The Mill MysteryThis is an excellent story, though the complications of the plot are almost extravagant. A dying man leaves the millions of which he becomes possessed almost in his last moments, to a stranger whom he has just seen for the first time, in trust for a person whom he has never seen at all, and, indeed, does not positively know to exist. A plot such as we may safely affirm never was contrived by mortal man, is formed to get hold of the money. But, if we can swallow the improbability, we shall have no more difficulty with the story. It is told in a very brilliant way. Not the least skilful thing in it is the sympathy which is excited for the girl who is the chief actor in the scheme.Anna Katharine Green was the most famous and prolific writer of detective fiction in the United States prior to Dashiell Hammett. Her first novel, The Leavenworth Case, was the bestseller of 1878. Green is credited with a number of "firsts" within the mystery genre, including the gentleman murdered as he makes out his will and the icicle as murder weapon. She created the first female detectives in American fiction. Her amateur spinster sleuth, Amelia Butterworth, became the prototype for numerous women detectives to follow, including Agatha Christie's Miss Marple. Nosy, opinionated, and tenacious, Amelia Butterworth engages in a sustained rivalry with Ebenezer Gryce, a police detective. In the interaction between these characters, Green developed two more conventions adopted by future generations of mystery writers: the investigation as battle between the sexes and between the professional and the unexpectedly sharp, observant amateur.
