Excerpt from A Hand-Book of the History of Painting, Vol. 2 The Editor is conscious that this second part of Kugler's Hand-hook of Painting appears under great disadvantages. The volume already published bears on its title-page the name of an editor, in whom literary acquirements are combined With a most extensive knowledge, and With first-rate excellence in the practice of that art to Which the book relates The reader will remember that such qualities can not be expected often to meet in one and the same person, as the editor of a popular manual, and he Will look with indulgence on the remarks of a mere amateur, in Whom scanty opportunities for observa tion, and a sincere love of the productions of art, Will have to supply the place of so much*. Excerpt from Handbook of the History of Painting, Vol. 1 of 2: From the Age of Constantine the Great to the Present Time IT is the Author's wish to supply, by means of the present hand-book, a want which he himself sen sibly experienced when he first endeavoured to ac quire a general knowledge of the early history and pro gress of the Art of Painting. He found no short and easily-intelligible guide, pointing out to the unlearned the leading styles of Art, and serving as an introduc tion to the researches of our most recent writers. The book now submitted to the indulgence of the con noisseur first consisted only of notes compiled for private study; these were augmented and corrected by the inspection of the most important specimens of Art, and the whole was finally arranged with a due regard to chronological order. The work makes no pretension to originality; its sole object, as already stated, is, to form an introduction to the more valu able productions in the literature of Art. The Author only hopes he may have succeeded in fulfilling the most obvious requisites for this end. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Handbook of Painting, Vol. 2 of 2: The Italian Schools; Based on the Handbook of Kugler Bono Ferrarese, obviously a native of Ferrara, has signed his name Opus Boni to the St. Christopher with the Infant Christ on his shoulder in the upper course of frescoes on the right wall of the chapel. Little is known of him. A small picture in the National Gallery, a St. Jerome in a land scape, bears witness to his having been a pupil of Pisano, being signed Bonus Ferrarz'ensts Pisani Discipulus. Excerpt from Handbook of Painting, Vol. 2 of 2: The Italian Schools; Based on the Handbooks of Kugler The Dukes of Ferrara called to their service Niccolo Pisano and Pietro della Francesca, and both these distin guished painters may have had some share in forming the Ferrarese school, which, however, bears no witness to the influence of either of them, but, like other schools of North Italy, shows that of Sguarcione and Jacopo Bellini at Padua. It was not until the second half of the fifteenth century that the true Ferrarese school, which was destined to have so great an influence over the art of Central Italy, and which even indirectly contributed, as ill hereafter be seen, to the formation of Raphael and Correggio, may be said to have been founded by two painters who deserve special noticeflcosimo Tum, called il Cosme, and Francesco oossol. Excerpt from Handbook of Painting, Vol. 2 of 2: German, Flemish, and Dutch Schools Harmony of colour - was seen for the first time developed in the utmost perfection, while the other great qualities of general keeping, Chiaroscuro, and that treatment of the brush - not lost, as formerly, in a fused surface, but employed for purposes of modelling - found ready response in their art-sympathies. As regards the class of subjects also available for the treatment of art a proportionable change had taken place. To the Van Eycks and their school the deep religious feeling of their time had chie y appealed for expression, and only occasionally did other subjects find admittance into the atelier. Now in all countries which had adopted the Reformation in its stricter forms - such as Holland, Switzerland, and parts of Germany - the Church had entirely abolished the services of art. In Catholic lands, it is true, a new religious impulse had found birth towards the close of the sixteenth and in the first half of the seventeenth century, but even there the invention of printing had robbed the artist of what in the middle ages had been his most important function, that of imparting instruction to the laity. Endowed, however, as art was by that time with all the powers of representation, she still sought to devote herself to the glorification of religion. On the other hand, 'in the more general diffusion of knowledge, other classes of sub jects, such as mythology and profane history, etc., could no longer be excluded from the painter's mind; thus the very power to devote himself solely to the contemplation of religious themes became sensibly diminished. A large por tion of his interest, therefore, was absorbed by the forms of representation which then obtained favour with the world, and especially by those far-fetched allegorical scenes which sought to embody, in a cold and artificial form, the learn ing of the day. In Belgium even, which had remained Catholic, many painters devoted themselves to subject and landscape painting. At the same time these branches of art, including the study of animals and owers, played at all times a subordinate part in that country, and the smal number of painters who cultivated them belong especially to the earlier division of this period. It was in Protestant Holland that not only these forms of art found their full. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from History of Painting, Vol. 2: The Painting of the Renascence I found scarcely any preliminary notes among my lamented friend's papers, beyond a few for Chapter VII. Excerpt from Handbook of Painting, Vol. 1 of 2: The Italian Schools; Based on the Handbook of Kugler Signor Morelli's work caused a profound sensation especially in Germany, Where the study of Art is pursued with greater ardour, and upon more scientific principles, than in any other country. The novelty of his opinions, his method of analysis, and the unsparing way in which he destroyed the reputation of many famous pictures, and exposed the falsity of many time-honoured traditions in the history of painting, raised, at first, a storm of protests. But his Views have now, for the most part, been accepted, and have even led to extensive changes in the naming and classing of pictures in the principal German galleries; whilst in England and elsewhere his method of investigation has been approved and adopted by the ablest writers on Art. In his own country he has founded a school of criticism, and has had many distinguished followers.2i. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
