This book describes a communication paradigm that could shape the future of wireless communication networks, Opportunistic Spectrum Access (OSA) in Cognitive Radio Networks (CRN). While several theoretical OSA approaches have been proposed, they are challenged by the practical limitations of cognitive radios: the key enabling technology of OSA. This book presents an unprecedented formulation of the OSA problem in CNR that takes into account the practical limitations encountered due to existing technologies. Based on such a problem formulation, this book presents a framework and protocol details implementing the analytically-optimized solution of this problem. Unlike the state-of-the-art of CRN implementations that typically target software define radios which are not suitable for real systems, this book describes the implementation of distributed OSA, using practical radio transceiver technologies. It provides a thorough characterization of the gains available to theoretical OSA approaches if the practical limitations are taken into consideration. Tackles the cognitive radio networks performance optimization problem, taking into account the practical limitations of today’s technologies; Provides thorough performance evaluation in arbitrary, large-scale networks, as well as microscopic, small-scale performance evaluation, using realistic hardware implementation; Presents an empirical study of the gains available over existing techniques by adopting practical approaches; Tackles the cognitive radio networks performance optimization problem, taking into account the practical limitations of today’s technologies; Provides thorough performance evaluation in arbitrary, large-scale networks, as well as microscopic, small-scale performance evaluation, using realistic hardware implementation; Presents an empirical study of the gains available over existing techniques by adopting practical approaches;

In cognitive radio system, secondary users are queued when primary users are utilizing its own channel. In that case secondary transmitters are idle and waiting for that channel to be freed. If so, why not use that idle secondary transmitter for primary users as helping hands by transmitting primary's data. This book explore the scarcity and management of current spectrum issue and proper management in three distinct methodologies. Firstly, Field surveying of spectrum within the range of 0.1 GHz to 3 GHz is done for finding white space. Secondly, white space is managed using user friendly graphical environment programmed in Matlab. Finally, performance is increased by reducing waiting delay in queue for secondary users. Sharing 50% of primary users' data by secondary transmitter, performance is increased up to 41% based on traffic load of incoming data on server and better on high traffic. Wireless Regional Area Network IEEE 802.22 parameters with data rate 24 Mbps is used for simulation in Matlab.

With the diversification of Internet services and the increase in mobile users, efficient management of network resources has become an extremely important issue in the field of wireless communication networks (WCNs). Adaptive resource management is an effective tool for improving the economic efficiency of WCN systems as well as network design and construction, especially in view of the surge in mobile device demands. This book presents modelling methods based on queueing theory and Markov processes for a wide variety of WCN systems, as well as precise and approximate analytical solution methods for the numerical evaluation of the system performance. This is the first book to provide an overview of the numerical analyses that can be gleaned by applying queueing theory, traffic theory and other analytical methods to various WCN systems. It also discusses the recent advances in the resource management of WCNs, such as broadband wireless access networks, cognitive radio networks, and green cloud computing. It assumes a basic understanding of computer networks and queueing theory, and familiarity with stochastic processes is also recommended. The analysis methods presented in this book are useful for first-year-graduate or senior computer science and communication engineering students. Providing information on network design and management, performance evaluation, queueing theory, game theory, intelligent optimization, and operations research for researchers and engineers, the book is also a valuable reference resource for students, analysts, managers and anyone in the industry interested in WCN system modelling, performance analysis and numerical evaluation.
