Excerpt from Some Old Love Stories For the next hour or two I shall walk by his side in spirit, for I shall try with the aid of another pen than his, but under the illumination I received from his conversation, to draw a portrait of his hero and his friend. Many people indeed will probably be startled to know that Abraham Lincoln had a love story at all. There are few modern contemporary characters of whose inner life so little is known among Englishmen. And yet there are few lives that have in them more of picturesqueness, pathos, suffering-that bring more. Excerpt from Love Stories From Real Life Now when a man, for no apparent reason, stares into space, smiles tender smiles, and heaves great sighs, it is safe 'to assume that he is crazy, - or in love. The doctor was not crazy even his enemies, of whom there was a mul titude, could not have admitted he was other than a highly intelligent young man of wit and more than ordi nary ability. It naturally followed, then, that he was in love. Would he have admitted this? Never! He counted himself far too sensible for that. Excerpt from Love of Comrades: A Romance Dressed as a man, I rode into the forest. It was the time of the beginning of leaves. In the cool grass the slender flowers were alert. Overhead the birds sang to one another, Come, look at little Margery Talbot, wear ing big boots and a long sword at her side. I did not think of the forest or the mountains beyond it or that dangerous Castle, for my thoughts were at a gabled and quiet house in a garden. There a crippled old man stood watching me in a porch under ivy; but I had not the heart to look back at him. Excerpt from The Book of Romance IT is to be supposed that children do not read Prefaces these are Bluebeard's rooms, which they are not curious to unlock. A few words may therefore be said about the Romances contained in this book. In the editor's Opinion, romances are only fairy tales grown up. The whole mass of the plot and incident of romance was invented by nobody knows who, nobody knows when, nobody knows where. Almost every people has the Cinderella story, with all sorts Of variations a boy hero in place Of a girl heroine, a beast in place of a fairy godmother, and so on. The Zunis, an agricultural tribe of New Mexico, have a version in which the moral turns out to be against poor Cinderella, who comes to an ill end. The Red Indians have the tale of Orpheus and Eurydice, told in a very touching shape, but without the music. On the other hand, the negroes in the States have the Orpheus tale, adapted to plantation life, in a form which is certainly borrowed from Europeans. This version was sent to me some years ago, by Mr. Barnet Phillips, Brooklyn, New York, and I give it here for its curiosity. If the proper names, Jim Orpus and Dicey, had not been given, we might not feel absolutely certain that the story was borrowed. It is a good example of adaptation from the heroic age of Greece to the servile age Of Africans. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
