"12 Step Poetry leads the reader through the emotional heights and depths of the awakening from addiction, the struggle, and the breakthrough into the light and warm embrace of recovery." Grant Schnarr "The 12th Step says 'having had a spiritual awakening as the result of these Steps, we tried to carry this message' to others in need. Why not use poetry to carry that message? This poet uses magical and heartfelt imagery to convey the journey to spiritual awakening, inviting us to do likewise. Poetry can bypass the guarded intellect, open up the heart and senses, and become a kind of prayer connecting us to the divine....." Drew Leder ".....a gift from an author who knows well the steps of this path, having entered through the grace of God into 'the foreign space of hopeful faith, ' discovering within all of us 'the pure manifestation of infinite Light unconditionally nourished by infinite Life.' I highly recommend this book for those who work the 12 Steps and anyone, everyone, who has the desire to delve deeply into the poetry of the human experience itself. If you have in any way struggled on a path of addiction to recovery, you will recognize yourself in these poems." Grant Schnarr

In here is an offering. An offering designed to enlighten and inspire anyone who is on the less traveled road laid out by the 12 steps of recovery. I say less traveled because the numbers of true recoverees is relatively small in comparison to the numbers of people caught in addictions. This collection has been many, many years in the making. I hope that it may bring some light and maybe a little humor to a relatively dark subject. I have tried not to offend sensitive eyes and pallets but there is some language used in the cramped world of users that works when other language doesn't, and some of it is in this collection. I have refrained from vulgarity however and if you can tolerate some compromise I am sure you will be pleasantly rewarded. If you are new to recovery you may be surprised at some of the things here that you thought no one else had ever thought. It is important to remember that the common thread in addiction is the lie that you are the only one who has ever done the things you are doing. There is only so much dysfunction in the world, and when you have been on the road of recovery for a while it becomes amazingly redundant. Everybody is stunned to find out they are not alone in their weirdness. Stunned and then relieved to find out that there is a way out. The bottom line is that we give up a life of using for a life of service. When you find this and come to terms with serving people who usually don't care, and you serve them anyway, then and only then will you start receiving the rewards that await you.

This one-of-kind book started with my very first poem I wrote, the "My Alcoholism" poem. I awoke one morning in March, 2009, at about 5:00am, with this poem in my head. So as not to forget, I went to the computer room and wrote it down on paper in about 15 minutes. I was not fully awake and proceeded back to bed. After morning breakfast and coffee, I took my daughter, Hannah, to school for the day. I came back home and put this poem into the computer, 99% pure from the first format. I proceeded in the months that followed to have many more inspirations from my "Higher Power". This book is the result of me following direction and using "His Will". In spite of my lack of talent and no experience, this book was completed, and I do believe it is a miracle. "He" provided me with 24 poems, to equal the 12 steps and 12 traditions of our program. I don't believe this to be a coincidence, and in reading this book I hope you will agree. As in our pre-amble primary purpose, I am staying sober today while doing this project, and I hope to help another member to achieve their sobriety. I wish all of you to enjoy this gift from our "Higher Power".

From the "astounding" (Entertainment Weekly), "spectacularly evocative" (The Atlantic), and "brilliant" (Los Angeles Times) author of the New York Times bestsellers The Recovering and The Empathy Exams comes a return to the essay form in this expansive book. With the virtuosic synthesis of memoir, criticism, and journalism for which Leslie Jamison has been so widely acclaimed, the fourteen essays in Make It Scream, Make It Burn explore the oceanic depths of longing and the reverberations of obsession. Among Jamison's subjects are 52 Blue, deemed "the loneliest whale in the world"; the eerie past-life memories of children; the devoted citizens of an online world called Second Life; the haunted landscape of the Sri Lankan Civil War; and an entire museum dedicated to the relics of broken relationships. Jamison follows these examinations to more personal reckonings -- with elusive men and ruptured romances, with marriage and maternity -- in essays about eloping in Las Vegas, becoming a stepmother, and giving birth. Often compared to Joan Didion and Susan Sontag, and widely considered one of the defining voices of her generation, Jamison interrogates her own life with the same nuance and rigor she brings to her subjects. The result is a provocative reminder of the joy and sustenance that can be found in the unlikeliest of circumstances. Finalist for the PEN/Diamonstein-Spielvogel Award for the Art of the Essay One of the fall's most anticipated books: Time, Entertainment Weekly, O, Oprah Magazine, Boston Globe, Newsweek, Esquire, Seattle Times, Baltimore Sun, BuzzFeed, BookPage, The Millions, Marie Claire, Good Housekeeping, Minneapolis Star Tribune, Lit Hub, Women's Day, AV Club, Nylon, Bustle, Goop, Goodreads, Book Riot, Yahoo! In my introduction I tell a tale and make the claim that I “discovered” the 12 Steps of AA, which may as well say 12 Steps of recovery as the wisdom of the Steps applies to so many addictions as well as mental-emotional disorders. I say, in the introduction, that I engaged in fervent prayer and when the light went on I was “told” to perform certain tasks. Each task was another Step along the path. And in the same exalted state of mind I was instructed to write down two things: The first on Love and how it cascades through the universe creating all things, even intelligent beings. The second occurred on the next day after I had completed Step 5, (sharing my writings). I was lead to write the verses, sayings and aphorisms that are found in this brief volume. Skeptical? Read the book and make up your own mind: Inspiration? or delusion?

The poems of In the Months of My Son’s Recovery inhabit the voice and point of view of the mother of a heroin addict who enters recovery. With clear perception and precise emotional tones, Kate Daniels explores recovery experiences from multiple, evolving vantage points, including active addiction, 12-step treatment, co-occurring mental illness and addiction (known as dual diagnosis), and relapse. These intimately voiced, harrowing poems reveal the collateral damage that addiction inflicts on friends and families, in addition to the primary damage sustained by addicts themselves. Offering bold descriptions of medical processes, maternal love, and the potential for hope as an antidote to despair, this timely collection offers a firsthand account of the many crises at the heart of the opioid epidemic.
