Excerpt from William Dawson Armstrong, American Composer A bright day in June, 1673, down the river come drifting with the current two canoes. In them are seated seven Frenchmen, two of them are Marquette and Joliet, the already famous explorers, who to their other laurels had just added the discovery of the Upper Mississippi. They were the first white men to view the site on which Alton now stands. That they got a start ling impression of it is shown by the record made by the gentle Father Marquette in his journal. The paint ing on the rocks which he described, was the famous Piasa Bird, since perpetuated in song and story. The good father's praise of the skill of Alton's prehistoric artist, is appreciated to this day, while his criticism of the wild and muddy ways of the Missouri is accepted. It is 243 years since he made his Observations and no reforma tion in the Missouri's mode of progress is yet apparent. Here is the primary reference source for the names and service records of upwards of 20,000 Kentucky soldiers and officers, both regular and militia, who served in the War of 1812. The muster rolls are laid out in tabular format by regiment and company, and thereunder the names are arranged by rank, with records of dates of appointment or enlistment and remarks such as when discharged, deceased, etc. As the official roster, this work was ordered to be compiled and printed by an Act of the Kentucky General Assembly, the number not to exceed 300 copies. The original records are now in the custody of the Kentucky Military Department, Frankfurt. To the work as originally published we have added an Index, completely lacking in the original. Our reprint is further enhanced by the inclusion of an Introduction by G. Glenn Clift which sets forth the background, location, and other sources of the records of the War of 1812 for the State of Kentucky.
