Excerpt from The Wearied Christ and Other Sermons Two pictures result from these two verses, each striking in itself, and gaining additional emphasis by the contrast. It was near the close of a long, hot days march that a tired band of pedestrians turned into the fertile valley. There, whilst the disciples went into the little hill-village to purchase, if they could, some food from the despised inhabitants, Jesus, apparently too exhausted to accompany them, "sat thus on the well." That little word thus seems to have a force difficult to reproduce in English. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Christ His Own Interpreter: And Other Sermons John X' am the good Shepherd: the good Shepherd giveth his life for the sheep. If there ever was a Being, wearing the human form and living among men, who knew Himself and why He came here it was the Man Christ Jesus. He always walked in the shadow of the Cross He never forgot that He came here to, do the Father's will. Self-knowledge is the most difficult knowledge which men ever attain. There is no sphynx in Egypt like the sphynx in a man's bosom. Men think too much or too little of them selves. They pride themselves on being What they are not: on having a Sphere which is not theirs. They undertake to do what they can not do they leave undone What they might do. All from want of self-knowledge. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Christ and His Friends: A Series of Revival Sermons The sermons in this volume were delivered in Hanson Place M. E. Church, Brooklyn, N. Y., during the month of January, 1895, in a series of revival meetings. It will be noted that the texts and themes are all selected from St. John's Gospel. The themes were selected some months prior to the delivery of the discourses, and such time as could be spared from the regular work of my ministry was devoted to the work of outline, Scriptural study, and the gathering of illustrative material from all sources open to me. When the time arrived, after a few hours' study during the morning of the day in which the sermon was to be delivered, it was first dictated to a stenographer, though it was afterward in the evening preached without notes. The entire thirty-one sermons were thus at last forged and delivered during that earnest campaign. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
