Excerpt from The Reconstruction of Russia The papers collected on the present occasion are intended to set before the British public some leading principles which ought, in our view, to govern the treatment of the Russian problem by the Peace Conference and the League of Nations. Certain considerations of decisive importance are often disregarded or thrust into the background in the discussions of this subject: we have endeavoured to show their vital significance. Neither abundance of details nor an exhaustive survey of possible solutions could be attempted in a popular survey of this kind. But, although our point of view is sufficiently characterized by the title - The Reconstruction of Russia - we have tried to do justice to the reasonable aspirations of the nationalities included in the Russian Empire in the past and dependent on the evolution of a free Russian Commonwealth in the future. Excerpt from Rasputin and the Russian Revolution Sian Court was published the Romanoffs were reign ing and, considering the fact that she was living in Russia at the time, the author of it, had her identity become known, would have risked being subjected to grave annoyances, and even being sent to that dis tant Siberia where Nicholas II is at present exiled. It was therefore deemed advisable to produce that work as a posthumous one, and Count Paul Vassili was represented as having died before the publication of his Memoirs. This however was not the case, be cause On the contrary he went on collecting infor mation as to all that was taking place at the Russian Court as well as in the whole of Russia, and, consign ing this information to a diary, he went on writing. If one remembers, Count Vassili distinctly foresaw and prophesied in his book most of the things that have occurred since it was published. This fact will perhaps give added interest to the present account Of the Russian Revolution which now sees the light of day for the first time. Though devoid of every thing sensational or scandalous it will prove interest ing to those who have cared for the other books of Count Vassili, for it contains nothing but the truth, and has been compiled chiefly out of the narrations of the principal personages connected in some way. Excerpt from America's Possible Share, in the Economic Future of Russia On the other hand, one of the most significant results of this War will be the material reconstruction of Europe. This recon struction will take place not only because there are many regions throughout Europe where the hurricane of the War has destroyed everything, but also because there are and there will be strong movements among the masses of the European peoples, demand ing better living conditions. The democratic governments of Europe have already acknowledged these movements and will have to acknowledge them further. The material reconstruction of Europe on the necessary scale is possible only through two factors: the participation of American capital in European industrial life and the develop ment of Russia's enormous natural resources and man-power. L Just as the political resurrection of Russia is the key to the solution of the entire European political problem, - without peace in Russia there never can be peace in Europe, - so the economic resurrection of Russia is to a great extent the key to the solution of the economic problem of Europe. Excerpt from The War and Liberty: And an Address on Reconstruction The chapters on "The War and Liberty" were first published as a series of articles in The New Statesman in May and June, 1917. I have to express my acknowledgments to the proprietors of that paper for their sanction to the re-publication. The chapter 011 Industrial Liberty has been expanded, and a few other alterations have been made. Excerpt from Britain After the Peace: Revolution or Reconstruction To me it seems clear that very little progress can be made in preparing for after-the-war problems, unless we realize that when the Kaiser declared war on France and Russia he began not merely a war, but a revolution. On that day society, as we have known it, committed suicide. Even if the blind Samson of German militarism had succeeded in pulling down the temple on the heads of its enemies, it must, nevertheless, have perished in the ruins itself. A sudden and sweeping victory, like that of 1870. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Historians overwhelmingly have blamed the demise of Reconstruction on Southerners' persistent racism. Heather Cox Richardson argues instead that class, along with race, was critical to Reconstruction's end. Northern support for freed blacks and Reconstruction weakened in the wake of growing critiques of the economy and calls for a redistribution of wealth. Using newspapers, public speeches, popular tracts, Congressional reports, and private correspondence, Richardson traces the changing Northern attitudes toward African-Americans from the Republicans' idealized image of black workers in 1861 through the 1901 publication of Booker T. Washington's Up from Slavery. She examines such issues as black suffrage, disenfranchisement, taxation, westward migration, lynching, and civil rights to detect the trajectory of Northern disenchantment with Reconstruction. She reveals a growing backlash from Northerners against those who believed that inequalities should be addressed through working-class action, and the emergence of an American middle class that championed individual productivity and saw African-Americans as a threat to their prosperity. The Death of Reconstruction offers a new perspective on American race and labor and demonstrates the importance of class in the post-Civil War struggle to integrate African-Americans into a progressive and prospering nation.
