Atoms and molecules are the basic building blocks of matter. Matter is every physical thing around us in the universe, including our own bodies! In Explore Atoms and Molecules! With 25 Great Projects, readers ages 7 to 10 investigate the structure of atoms and learn how atoms fit together to form molecules and materials. If everything is made out of atoms and molecules, why do people look different from dogs and doorknobs? In Explore Atoms and Molecules, readers discover that the characteristics of a material are determined by the way the atoms and molecules connect, and study how chemical reactions change these connections to create everything we know. This book discusses the elements on the periodic table and why they are grouped into families, encouraging the exploration of meaningful classification systems. States of matter and mixtures and compounds round out the exploration of atoms and molecules! This book supports the maker movement with lots of hands-on activities that illuminate the concepts of chemistry. Readers build 3-D models of molecules and create a periodic table guessing game. Fascinating sidebars offer opportunities for readers to connect the text with real-world science, and cartoon illustrations provide a fun foundation for learning.

Our eyes help us look at the world, but there are many things we cannot see. Atoms are the building blocks of everything in the universe, from planets and stars to the cells that make up plants, animals, and the human body. Atoms are invisible because they are so small, but bigger things can be invisible, too. Ancient artifacts and buried bones are hidden under the ground, while invisible forces such as earthquakes and winds shape life on Earth. This book explores the invisible world of atoms and molecules. Find out about the particles inside atoms, and see how they help atoms join up to form molecules. Learn about atoms and the digital age, and see how nanotechnology is changing the world. Book jacket.

Nineteenth-century chemists were faced with a particular problem: how to depict the atoms and molecules that are beyond the direct reach of our bodily senses. In visualizing this microworld, these scientists were the first to move beyond high-level philosophical speculations regarding the unseen. In Image and Reality, Alan Rocke focuses on the community of organic chemists in Germany to provide the basis for a fuller understanding of the nature of scientific creativity. Arguing that visual mental images regularly assisted many of these scientists in thinking through old problems and new possibilities, Rocke uses a variety of sources, including private correspondence, diagrams and illustrations, scientific papers, and public statements, to investigate their ability to not only imagine the invisibly tiny atoms and molecules upon which they operated daily, but to build detailed and empirically based pictures of how all of the atoms in complicated molecules were interconnected. These portrayals of “chemical structures,” both as mental images and as paper tools, gradually became an accepted part of science during these years and are now regarded as one of the central defining features of chemistry. In telling this fascinating story in a manner accessible to the lay reader, Rocke also suggests that imagistic thinking is often at the heart of creative thinking in all fields. Image and Reality is the first book in the Synthesis series, a series in the history of chemistry, broadly construed, edited by Angela N. H. Creager, John E. Lesch, Stuart W. Leslie, Lawrence M. Principe, Alan Rocke, E.C. Spary, and Audra J. Wolfe, in partnership with the Chemical Heritage Foundation.

This is a detailed introduction to matter, the elements of the periodic table, atoms, electrons, reactions and bonding, and radioactivity. This volume provides young adults with chemistry examples that reflect their real-world. Key terms, easy experiments, and clear illustrations guide students through subatomic explorations. A chapter about Niels Bohr and his model for the atom honors his contribution to the understanding of atomic structure. Tools and techniques, such as a scanning tunneling microscope, Rutherford's gold foil experiment, and a mass spectrometer, help readers to gain a comprehensive understanding of atoms and molecules.
