Excerpt from The Lost River While wandering among the mountains they met a veteran miner - Jarvis Metcalf - who had gone thither to look for a rich deposit Of gold. That which led him to make this venture was a paper given to him by an Old friend, named Covington, just before he died, which paper contained the drawing of three mountain peaks, with a short, winding stream at the base. Could these landmarks be found, there would be no trouble in locating the spot where the treasure was said to exist. The doubt in the whole matter lay in the fact that the miner who made the drawing and wrote Out the directions had been clouded in his mind most of the time, and it was probable that the whole thing was a freak of his twisted brain. Excerpt from The Mystery of Lost River Canyon One hot, sultry August afternoon, a weary horse, whose heaving sides and foam-flecked breast bore evidence to the fact that he had been driven long and rapidly, was reined up in front of a little station on the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railroad. His rider - a tall, broad-shouldered, full-bearded man - was dressed in clothing which seems to have been chosen by the ranchmen of the country of which we write, as a badge distinctive of their calling - a red shirt, wide-brimmed bat, corduroy trousers and heavy top boots. Excerpt from Legends of Lost River Valley Recollecting the interest awakened in the minds of those who heard the words of Joseph Pontus, as spoken during the preparation of the memo randa from which the following chapters were written, and ever recalling the request of my comrades and friends of long ago, I have sacredly preserved the original memoranda for many years past. If their use at this time serves to kindle in the mind and heart of the reader, even a trifling part of the interest created by their original de livery, I will be amply repaid for time spent and work done, and shall enjoy the satisfaction of having, to some extent, at least, contributed to the entertainment and happiness of others. Excerpt from Brown of Lost River: A Story of the West Her first glance developed an expression of disappointment, fast deepening into something like consternation, as she grasped the limitations of this place in which she found herself to all in tents alone, the June twilight filled with chill whispers of the night so near at hand. But Edith Ellery was not given to nervous tremors, and although she felt her heart sinking within her, she still wore a sturdy little air of self-reli ance as she made her way toward the observant gentleman in the official cap. I was expecting the Ellery carriage to meet me - from the K 6 ranch, you know, she said, with a questioning inflection, a certain note sounding through the polished sweetness of her voice telling that she had been schooled to ex peet all possible deference as no less than her due. Charles Austin Fosdick (September 6, 1842 - August 22, 1915), better known by his nom de plume Harry Castlemon, was a prolific writer of juvenile stories and novels, intended mainly for boys. He was born in Randolph, New York, and received a high school diploma from Central High School in Buffalo, New York. He served in the Union Navy from 1862 to 1865, during the American Civil War, acting as the receiver and superintendent of coal for the Mississippi River Squadron. Fosdick had begun to write as a teenager, and drew on his experiences serving in the Navy in such early novels as Frank on a Gunboat (1864) and Frank on the Lower Mississippi (1867). He soon became the most-read author for boys in the post-Civil War era, the golden age of children's literature.
