Excerpt from The Life of Joshua R. Giddings In the following pages I have dealt with the chief facts in the public life of Joshua R. Giddings. Its importance centres entirely in his warfare against Slavery. To this he dedicated himself with absolute singleness of purpose and the whole strength of his nature. It seems to have been his predestined work; for he was drawn to it by every fibre of his heart and every prompting of his judgment and conscience. It was this fervor of spirit and perfect concentration of energy which armed him with his power, and enabled him to link his name imperishably with a cause which vitally involved the fortunes of the Republic and the progress of liberty throughout the world. That such a life should be fitly commemorated, will not be disputed. Interesting sketches of his career have been given to the public, but as yet no adequate life of the man has appeared. Whether I have produced this in the volume now submitted, I must leave my readers to determine. I have made an honest endeavor, and this was prompted by several considerations. Excerpt from Joshua R. Giddings: A Sketch Giddings, far rougher names than thine have grown Smoother than honey on the lips of men; And thou shalt aye be honorably known, As one who bravely used the tongue and pen As best befits a freeman; - even for those To whom our laws' unblushing front denies A right to plead against the life-long woes Which are the negroes' glimpse of freedom's skies. Fear nothing and hope all things, as the right Alone may do securely; every hour The thrones of ignorance and ancient Night Lose somewhat of their long usurped power; And freedom's lightest word can make them shiver With a base dread that clings to them forever. - William Cullen Bryant. The dramatic story of the United States’ destruction of a free and independent community of fugitive slaves in Spanish Florida In the aftermath of the War of 1812, Major General Andrew Jackson ordered a joint United States army-navy expedition into Spanish Florida to destroy a free and independent community of fugitive slaves. The result was the Battle of Negro Fort, a brutal conflict among hundreds of American troops, Indian warriors, and black rebels that culminated in the death or re-enslavement of nearly all of the fort’s inhabitants. By eliminating this refuge for fugitive slaves, the United States government closed an escape valve that African Americans had utilized for generations. At the same time, it intensified the subjugation of southern Native Americans, including the Creeks, Choctaws, and Seminoles. Still, the battle was significant for another reason as well. During its existence, Negro Fort was a powerful symbol of black freedom that subverted the racist foundations of an expanding American slave society. Its destruction reinforced the nation’s growing commitment to slavery, while illuminating the extent to which ambivalence over the institution had disappeared since the nation’s founding. Indeed, four decades after declaring that all men were created equal, the United States destroyed a fugitive slave community in a foreign territory for the first and only time in its history, which accelerated America’s transformation into a white republic. The Battle of Negro Fort places the violent expansion of slavery where it belongs, at the center of the history of the early American republic.
