Given that the software industry is commonly viewed as a high-tech industry, how is it that its spectacular growth has occurred in countries where high-tech industries would not seem likely to develop? This book examines the reasons behind this phenomenon, and asks whether it suggests a new model of economic development.

"India Shining" has become the brand name for a new India presented in Bollywood films, advertisements, and books. A key part of this image is the software industry, held up as the symbol of prosperity and post-modernity. Opening with a primer on the Seven Leading Myths about the Indian IT Industry, Dot.compradors reveals the darker reality behind "India Shining," providing a history of the industry from the 1970s to the present day. Jyoti Saraswati punctures the myth of a free-market industry by showing the role of state intervention, and shows how vested interests and elite corruption have shaped, and continue to shape, one of the world's most dynamic sectors. Both a detailed case study and a wider consideration of development issues, Dot.compradors argues that the software industry is a substantial obstacle to a broader-based, more egalitarian form of development in India.

Seminar paper from the year 2004 in the subject Economics - Case Scenarios, grade: 67% (Upper second class), University of Westminster (University of Westminster (London)), course: International Trade & Finance, language: English, abstract: Today India is the second most populous country in the world, with about 1.04 billion people. Two-thirds of India’s population work in the agricultural sector and account for around 25% of GDP. The Indian indicator of human development is one of the lowest in the world, and a large fraction of the population still lives below the poverty line. Nevertheless, due to India’s liberalising reform programme and the rising economic de-velopment, the number of poor people will decline to 220.1 million by 2007 according to the Planning Commission. The World Bank estimates that India will become the fourth largest economy in the world by 2020. While increasing pressures on domestic industry will have to cope with competition from imports, liberalisation of trade will open up new opportunities for ex-port of goods. India’s service sector has already become the dominant contributor to GDP, accounting for 46 per cent of the total. NASSCOM, the Indian industry’s lobby, has stated that the country’s exports from software, other IT services and business-process-outsourcing in-dustries grew by more than 25% to $12 billion last year, of which infrastructure services accounted for just over $300m. The global market for textiles, clothing and agricultural products will expand dramati-cally, but India’s ability to export will depend on its capacity to keep pace with rising international standards of price, quality productivity and service.

This paper analyzes the evolution and changing scenario of the software industry from its inception till now and derives the patterns of the changing opportunities and challenges for the emergence and growth of this industry group. The longitudinal perspective focuses on the stages of development in the software industry, including the clear inflection points. In the early years, Indian software firms used to send people to customers' locations abroad to do development work. The primary work done by the Indian firms till the early 1990s was simple coding and testing. As time progressed, Indian software firms acquired higher skills in software development and project management. High skill levels allowed these firms to rapidly move up the value chain from simple coding to complete system design. This paper focuses on the Indian software industry and the trends of this growing industry. The factors that make India seek competitive advantage, along with the constraints and challenges faced, are also discussed. The current industry demand and supply dynamics are elaborated on a strategic level.
