Excerpt from The East Riding of Yorkshire The book is the result of a very careful survey, made, expressly for the purpose of writing these pages, during the Long Vacation of 1903. Notes were then taken on the spot; and, although I cannot hope to have escaped from some inac curacies, and although changes, in some instances, may since have taken place, yet it is hoped that this little volume may form a fairly reliable record of the East Riding churches as they appeared in the summer in question. Excerpt from Old Yorkshire Having been favoured with several most interesting original contributions, I have as yet used but a small proportion of the articles in Local Notes and Queries, and it is my intention, should the present venture meet with the approval of my subscribers and the public, to issue another volume of Old Yorkshire in the autumn of the present year, and subsequently, a volume on the first day of March in each year. Each of these issues will contain choice selections from the Mercury Supplement, together with original contributions; and the series, will it is hoped, be a worthy addition to the history of our ancient county, and tend to save from perishing much that is curious, In order to make the successive volumes of Old Yorkshire as interesting as possible, I shall be glad to receive mss. And other communications, also gifts or loans of wood and steel engravings, as well as suggestions from all who feel interested in the project. Excerpt from The Folk Speech of East Yorkshire Before the construction Of roads and railways, and more perfect drainage, the towns and villages of East Yorkshire, especially in the low-lying parts, between the Wolds and the sea, were isolated and cut off from communication one with another, by the boggy marshy state Of the country and thus an archaic form of speech has been preserved. You may yet find an aged person who has never been out of the village toon he very properly calls it) in which he was born. Such an one is the very incarnation of the dialect. The Riding of the Stang (p. 8) was performed on February 18, 19, and 20, 1889, at Hedon, a small ancient borough. Excerpt from Some East Yorkshire Worthies "Servants of God, well done! They serve God well Who serve His creatures. When the funeral bell Tolls for the dead, there's nothing left of all That decks the 'scutcheon and the velvet pall Save this. The coronet is empty show - The strength and loveliness are hid below. The shifting wealth to others hath accrued. The learning cheers not the grave's solitude. What's done is what remains! Ah, blessed they Who have completed tasks of love to stay And answer mutely for them, being dead! Life was not purposeless, though life be fled." Mrs. Norton. Excerpt from Folk Lore of East Yorkshire An Icelandic Saiga tells of a man who, standing at his cottage door, saw some souls pass through the air. Among them he recognised his own, and had scarcely time to relate the incident before he died. Very many similar stories stories not ancient, but very modern - are current to day among the old folks. Here is one. A man went on St. Mark's Eve to watch in the church porch, where he saw enter the church the shades of several he knew, followed by some mysterious unknown forms, carrying a coffin. He endeavoured to see the features of the corpse, but was unable to do so 5 though, in answer to his earnest longing, a whisper came through the quiet midnight air, 'tis yourself He went home, filled with fatal fear, took to his bed and died. The appearance of the wraith or form of the deceased is still as firmly believed to be a Sign of death as it was inthe days Of Olaf and though the bah-gest, * with its eyes as big as saucers, has ceased its terrifying rambles, and its growlings are no longer heard round the house of the doomed one, the howling of the yard dog has taken its place as an omen of death. The ancient belief that the spirit requires space or room to pass still receives credence; for when a person is dying a window or door is opened in order that the spirit may pass away easily. One of the most vivid recollections of my boyhood is the death-bed of a younger brother. On a low bed, near a corner of the room, lay the poor little fellow whose life was rapidly ebbing. By the bedside sat my aged grandmother, silently praying, and the only sounds in the room were the laboured breathing of the dying boy and the smothered sobs of the assembled relatives; and as the end drew near my grandmother directed that a door leading into another room should be opened, and that room was ever afterwards associated with ghosts and spirits. Excerpt from The Registers of Huggate: Yorkshire The Registers of Huggate commence in the year 1539 and, to the year 1812, are contained in five volumes. Volumes I and II have been bound together of recent years, and measure 14 ins. long by 9 ins. wide. The leaves are of parchment. Volume I contains Baptisms, 1539 to 1627, and Marriages and Burials, 1539 to 1626. The manner of making the entries in this volume has been to divide the page into two columns, and to keep each class of entry, whether Baptism, Burial, or Marriage, in its own column throughout. The transcription and printing have followed the Register page by page, thus avoiding the possibility of any omission, which might otherwise have occurred if each class of entry had been taken separately. Volume II begins in 1708 and ends in 1787 for the Baptisms and Burials, and in 1751 for the Marriages. There is thus a break of some eighty-two years between the two volumes, probably an entire Register being lost. That this loss is not of recent date is proved by the Return made to Parliament in 1831, where, on page 379, it is stated that "No Register, 1625 to 1708, can be found." Volume III is of paper, and measures 15 ins. long by 9 ins. wide, and consists of thirty-five used pages, the remainder being blank, and contains Banns and Marriages only, from 1755 to 1812, in the usual printed form. Volume IV measures 17 ins. long by 12 ins. wide, and contains only seven pages that are used for entries, four at the beginning. Baptisms, 1789 to 1798, and three at the end. Burials, 1788 to 1798. Excerpt from The North Riding of Yorkshire A word of apology is possibly needed for the free introduction of references. These serve, it is hoped, a double purpose. In the first place they discriminate, moie OI less completely, between statements for which the writer is primarily Ie sponsible, and statements that are made on the authority of others. In the second place, they constitute a useful index to the numerous papers and notices dealing with the Riding that are scat tered up and down in a number of volumes. The procedure is not without precedent: and, anyhow, it is hoped that its practical convenience may te deem it from any charge of pedantry to which it might otherwise seem open. Lastly, the thanks of the writer are due to Mr St John Hope fo. Permission to introduce the plans ofjervaulx and Easby Abbeys; to Mr William Brown and the Yorkshire Archaeological Society for the plan of Mount Grace Priory; to Messrs Love and Malcomson for the plans of Pickering and Scarbrough Castles; to the Rev. A. R. T. Eales, m.a., and Mr F. C. Bayard, for the loan of books of reference; and to the clergy of the Riding for the consistent kindness with which they have assisted him in the work of exploration.
