This is a full color edition of my Eastern Caribbean Islands book that is presently out in paperback, but in black and white. The Eastern Caribbean islands are essentially the Lesser Antilles, a group of primarily volcanic islands that extend in an arc from the Virgin Islands in the north all the way down to Trinidad just off the coast of South America. Many of the islands are still volcanically active. Remember in the 1990's, the massive eruption that almost totally destroyed the small island of Monserrat. In 1902, a violent eruption on the northern end of Martinique destroyed the then capital city of St. Pierre, killing over 30,000 residents in a Vesuvius type explosion. Despite the danger on some of the islands, there is great beauty in the tropical rain forests, sandy beaches and turquoise waters of the Lesser Antilles. And culturally these islands blend the majority population of African extraction with the basic cultural traits of the former colonial powers that include British, French, Spanish, Dutch and Danish. There is an overall charm in these islands that is the true heart of the Caribbean. Puerto Rico is not one of the Lesser Antilles, but it is often the start or end point for cruises to these islands. And physically it is so close to the Virgin Islands, that for practical purposes I have included it in this book. But it is geographically part of the Greater Antilles, which include Cuba, Hispaniola and Jamaica. This book will provide great detail for those who are cruising, as it does not offer hotel recommendations. It primarily focuses upon the major ports of call for one-day visits by ship.
