Excerpt from The Anti-Slavery Reporter, Vol. 5: October 1, 1832 The third number of the new series of the Christian Record of Jamaica has recently arrived in this country. It bears the date of March, 1832, and is perhaps one of the most important publications which have been issued under that title. It is distinguished by its fidelity and boldness. We feel that we cannot render a more essential service to the cause of humanity and truth than by largely analysing its contents. Let it be kept in mind that this work is published in Jamaica, is addressed to the community of that Island, and challenges contradiction on the spot. Excerpt from The Anti-Slavery Reporter, Vol. 4: January 5, 1831 They had studiously endeavoured to exclude Christian missionaries troui the colonies chapels and meeting-houses had been pulled down and razed, and ex en the persons of theo ministers invaded and t0itured to the death Applause. As a proof that it was the set purpose of W est India proprietors to put down all attempts to instruct the ne groes, he referred to their refusal to appoint any other day than Sun day for holding their markets. In consequence of another recent enactment, no negro was allowed to attend worship at all, between the setting and rising of the sun; and as they must work from the rising to the setting of that luminary, it was evident that they had no time for worship at all, - for on Sunday they must cultivate their provision Grounds. It was the duty of every man who had been taught to look his fellow-creature in the face to exert himself to put an end to this hapless slavery; and he trusted he had said enough to satisfy all who heard him that slavery was an abominable curse and crime, and that the only cure for the evils which he had enumerated was emancipation. Excerpt from The Anti-Slavery Reporter, Vol. 3: October 5, 1830 It is well known that one of the principal charges, brought forward by the Anti Slavery men and their adherents in England against the West Indians, is to this effect That from the state of the Colonial laws, and their defective administration, the slave, when wronged by the free man, cannot obtain legal redress.' It is not my wish to join in such a cry, nor is it my design at present to advocate either the prin ciples or the conduct of any party whatsoever. But, Sir, when a case falls under my observation, in which a slave has been grossly injured by a free man, has sought legal redress, and has been denied it, then I hold it to be a matter Of duty to put forth every effort on behalf Of the oppressed, however slight the chance of ultimate success, as I am equally satisfied it is the interest of every honest and independent Colonist to second my endeavours.
