Excerpt from The American Rose Culturist Oh whence could such a plant have sprung? Attend - for thus the tale is sung; When, humid from the silvery stream, Venus appeared, in flushing hues, Mellowed by ocean's briny dews When, in the starry courts above, The pregnant brain of mighty Jove Disclosed the nymph of azure glance The nymph who shakes the martial lance Then, then, in strange eventful hour, The earth produced an infant flower, Which sprung, with blushing tinctures drest, And wantoned o'er its parent's breast. Excerpt from The American Rose Annual, 1921 Very grateful is the Editor for the courtesy of the Secretary of the National Rose Society of England, as well as for the help of our French friends, MM. Turbat and Siret. One regret the Editor expresses: that so small a percentage of the widespread membership of the Society responds with asked-for information and suggestions. Most interesting are the letters that do come, but the Editor feels that it would only be a fair recognition of the time and effort gladly spent on his part if many more rose friends would write in inquiry, in criticism, in suggestion, in helpful attention. Isn't the rose prosperity of America worth a letter and a stamp once a year? A "rose-note" may help another member past a hard spot. Our friends are especially urged to use promptly the enclosed mailing cards. The organization of the Society has been notably advanced in the establishment of the Secretary's office in Philadelphia. The "Members' Handbook" which follows the Annual, with various details and the complete membership list in alphabetical and in geographical forms, is an evidence of the increasing strength of the Society. This strength should increase materially in 1921 through the efforts of our members. The tradesmen whose announcements follow the text are all reliable, and their offerings are commended to our members. The tradesmen whose announcements follow the text are all reliable, and their offerings are commended to our members. It is hoped to present thus each year a practically complete list of the dependable rose merchants of America. Excerpt from The American Rose Culturist Rose! thou art the sweetest flower That ever drank the amber shower; Rose! thou art the fondest child Of dimpled Spring, the wood nymph wild. Anacreon. The Rose, the emblem of beauty and the pride of Flora, reigns Queen of the Flowers in every part of the globe; and the bards of all nations and languages have sung its praises. Yet what poet has been able, or language sufficient, to do justice to a plant that has been denominated the Daughter of Heaven, the glory of spring, and the ornament of the earth? As it is the most common of all that compose the garland of Flora, so it is the most delightful. Every country boasts of it, and every beholder admires it. Poets have celebrated its charms without exhausting its eulogium; for its allurements increase upon a familiarity, and every fresh view presents new beauties, and gives additional delight. Hence it renovates the imagination of the bard, and the very name of the flower gives harmony to his numbers, as its odors give sweetness to the air. Excerpt from The American Rose Annual: 1922 The steady progress of the effort to make the rose universal in America through the introduction of varieties able to endure the varied conditions of our vast area is checked; not stopped, by the untimely death of that great genius of hybridization, Dr. Van Fleet. It has seemed best, inasmuch as he had for six years used the American Rose Annual to report the progress of his adventures into the world's rose resources, to present in this issue some detailed account of the life and personal qualities of that great man. In the fine forward look of President Pyle mention is made Of the desirability Of having many rose shows in America in 1922. TO aid those who are disposed to undertake this pleasant and desirable work, experiences and suggestions are given in several articles. It is hoped that these will be found useful. The two referendums to our members brought out strongly the desire to know how to protect roses from insects and dis eases. The articles provided are probably the most complete presentations yet made on that essential subject, and they ought to be very helpful. There is always interest in new roses, always the lure Of the novelty. The Editor's office has diligently pursued all the rose hybridists of the world, and in consequence there is printed in this Annual a very complete account of the new roses, as well as critical comment on many of them by capable foreign and American rosarians. Excerpt from The Rose in America N 0 one but myself is responsible for what I have written, though some rose friends have kindly read the manuscript. All of it has been scanned by Mrs. Francis King, President of the Woman's National Farm and Garden Association, and by Dr. L. H. Bailey, horticultural author and editor; and certain chapters have had the critical attention of Mr. E. H. Wilson, the famous plant collector, now Assistant Director of the Arnold Arboretum, and of Mr. Robert Pyle, President Of the American Rose Society. Excerpt from The American Rose Annual: The 1918 Year-Book of Rose Progress In the midst of the world war this third American Rose Annual is sent out, in the feeling that there is no least lack of patriotic fervor and no failure to sense the seriousness of the combat for the very life of civilization in thus aiming to promote the prosperity of the rose. Every day that passes, every word from the front, every item concerning the support of the war, shows the worth-whileness of recourse to the best that nature can give, in order that we may more courageously, humanly, and efficiently face the common foe. It is in this feeling that the Editor has secured the important symposium, "Shall We Grow Roses in Wartime?" which immediately follows. Evidences are not lacking that the preceding issues of this little book have served as a magnet to draw together and weld firmly not only the rose-growers of America, but our friendly allies in England and in France. The American Rose Society has in the past year materially increased in strength and importance, and its future seems bright with possibilities. It will be observed by those who consult this Annual that the discussion as to rose stocks is going on encouragingly and importantly. The memorandum in "Rose Notes" relating to importations shows the necessity, if we are to have roses in the United States, of arranging to grow them successfully here. Much space has been given to the presentation of the thoughtful and scientific tests of roses conducted in Captain George C. Thomas' great garden, and also to the report of impartial observations in the Washington and Cornell Test-Gardens. It is believed that rose-lovers will find in these observations and in other articles of the same nature valuable information in considering rose varieties. If the American Rose Society had done nothing else than to foster the orderly study of rose pathology, it would deserve its present prosperity.
