Debates on security became more intense following the unanticipated end of the Cold War conflict and took on added force after the terrorist attacks on the US on September 11, 2001. Generally viewed as a part of the wider 'West' despite its separation by enormous geographical distances from both Europe and the United States, Australia is a regional power in its own right. It has been an active and loyal member of the US-led coalitions of the willing, first in Afghanistan and then in Iraq. The terrorist attacks in Bali one year after the attacks in the United States brought home to Australia the direct nature of the new global terrorist threats to its own security. This volume brings together leading experts on international security and Australia's foreign and security policies in a critical examination of Australia's adaptations to the new security challenges. It is the first in-depth and comprehensive analysis of Australia's defence and security policies as well as the country's role in countering regional and global challenges to international security since the war on terrorism began.

Terror in Australia: Workers' Paradise Lost, by veteran journalist John Stapleton, is a beautifully written snapshot of a pivotal turning point in the history of the so-called Lucky Country. This book is a sidewinding missile into the heart of Australian hypocrisy. In 2015 there were well attended Reclaim Australia demonstrations in every major capital city, all protesting what the demonstrators saw as the growing Islamisation of Australia, along with countering anti-racism demonstrations. There were frequent violent clashes, hundreds of police were forced to form lines separating the demonstrators in Sydney and Melbourne, there were a significant number of arrests and injuries, and dozens of people were treated for the effects of capsicum spray. The terror alert was at its highest level ever, the country was engaged in an unpopular and discredited war in Iraq and Syria, and relations between the government and an increasingly radicalised Muslim minority had broken down. Despite the billions being spent on national security, authorities believed another terrorist attack was inevitable. A demoralised population, saddled with a history of grotesque overregulation, turned inwards, increasingly questioning the failed social creeds of the past. On the streets once vibrant entertainment districts were desolate, while closed and shuttered shops became a characteristic of many suburbs. An optimistic, freedom loving country with an irreverent, larrikin culture and a wildly optimistic view of its place in the world lost faith in its own story. Well documented, switching through multiple points of view, Terror in Australia: Workers' Paradise Lost is a sometimes frightening, sometimes intensely lyrical step inside a democracy in serious trouble.

Terrorism in Australia takes us into a world unknown to most of us on how the culture of terrorists groups work and think and how this is an issue that authorities continue to strive to stay on top of around the world but also in Australia. How do we stop an attack on our shores, who is who in our terrorist groups in Australia and around the world and stories behind capturing some of the most dangerous terrorists in Australia and putting them into prison. Peter also reveals the shadowy world of how Australian teens are being radicalised and he also takes us deep inside the first major Terrorism Police Organization in Australia where terrorism wasn't a word used often. Peter now uses his skills and insight into organised crime and terrorism with background information on how Terrorism became a word now used often in Australia and how his work with governments all over the world has become so vital to stopping Terrorism in Australia. Most books discuss the history of Terrorism unlike this book which tells the stories of the police and how they stopped terrorism in Australia before it became too late. Peter has conducted terrorism related investigations/training in Egypt, France, England, Northern Ireland, Canada and the United States. Peter has been extensively awarded for previous criminal investigations, including the AFP Operations Medal, Investigation of the Year (Specialist), NSW Police Commissioner Commendation (x 4) for criminal investigation.

The Commonwealth has strong, well-coordinated counter-terrorism (CT) arrangements. Overall, these have been quite successful, although the Martin Place siege and the stabbing of police in Melbourne raise questions. Despite improvements in CT capability, a terrorist attack is possible. All of the terrorism-related metrics are worsening: known numbers of foreign fighters, sympathisers and supporters, serious investigations. We are not 'winning' on any front. Every dollar must be spent wisely. We face a new paradigm that demands ever more careful prioritisation. National security agencies must come together seamlessly around shared priorities. A restructure or reshuffle of national security agencies is not the answer. But more must be done to strengthen cross-agency coordination and leadership. Whatever we do, there is no short-term solution to our evolving terrorist challenge. It is almost inevitable that we will have more terrorist attacks on Australian soil. Long term, we must put a greater effort into reducing, rather than managing, the pool of terrorists, their supporters and sympathisers.

Over ten years after Australia’s first national laws were enacted to combat the threat of terrorism, yet more anti-terrorism laws were passed in the Australian Parliament in late 2014. The first laws were often introduced in great haste and were stunning in scope and number. The latest laws are similarly extensive and controversial. Yet again, powers and sanctions once thought to lie outside the rules of a liberal democracy except during wartime have become part of Australian law. Timely, piercing and in regard to the first set of laws, written with the benefit of hindsight, this book asks whether Australia really needed to enact anti-terrorism laws in the first place, let alone add to them? Do the new laws pose increased threats to freedom of speech and freedom of the press? Have these laws been effective in protecting the community, or do they represent a long-term threat to the health of Australian democracy? Which laws have proved their worth – and which have not? And what has been the impact of the laws in Australia’s anti-terrorism trials and on the Muslim community? Most tellingly, the book asks whether seeing these anti-terror laws as normal is a danger in itself.

This edited collection brings together leading scholars to comparatively investigate national security, surveillance and terror in the early 21st century in two major western jurisdictions, Canada and Australia. Observing that much debate about these topics is dominated by US and UK perspectives, the volume provides penetrating analysis of national security and surveillance practices in two under-studied countries that reveals critical insights into current trends. Written by a wide range of experts in their respective fields, this book addresses a fascinating array of timely questions about the relationship among national security, privacy and terror in the two countries and beyond. Chapters include critical assessments of topics such as: National Security Intelligence Collection since 9/11, The Border as Checkpoint in an Age of Hemispheric Security and Surveillance, Unmanned Aerial Vehicles and Law Enforcement, as well as Federal Government Departments and Security Regimes. An engaging and empirically driven study, this collection will be of great interest to scholars of security and surveillance studies, policing, and comparative criminology.

Seminar paper from the year 2012 in the subject Politics - Topic: Peace and Conflict, Security, grade: B, University of Canberra, language: English, abstract: The controversy surrounding the definition of terrorism has led to minimalistic approaches to the issue thus reducing a clear cut understanding of what terrorism entails. The fact that the practice is fuelled by emotional and political motivation makes it even more difficult for scholars to come to a common ground on what really constitutes terrorism if at all a definition cannot surmise. However, the studies in terrorism activities have given better insight than all politically self serving semantic propaganda that everyone uses to justify or condemn terrorism. A close analysis of a terrorist group in an existing socio political and economic context is the only valid method to help us understand what terrorism is and all the other germane issues that surround the controversial subject. For this purpose, I have selected the most well known terrorist group in the world al-Qaeda as a case study to try and understand the fundamental issues that make it the most feared group and what qualifies it as a terrorist group in the first place.
