Excerpt from Sermons on Various Subjects, Doctrinal, Experimental and Practical, Vol. 1 A True conception of divine goodness, is necessary for a right understanding of God's infinite nature, and of his eternal government. The goodness or love of God, means his holiness, his whole rectitude, and all the moral perfections of his nature; which we describe by different names, from the various effects produced in the state of creatures, by the divine action. Every thing in the moral character of God, may be resolved into his goodness or holiness. Acts of justice, are also acts of goodness. God is as good in making a connection between sin and misery, and in punishing impenitent transgressors; as he is in giving life and immortality to the holy. Excerpt from Sermons on Practical Subjects, Vol. 1 The Sermons of the Reverend Robert Walker have long and justly enjoyed a large portion of Public approbation. Those which were published in the Author's lifetime acquired a rapid reputation. The Sermons which were added after his death, though deficient perhaps in the last polish of an intended publication, did not detract from his well-earned fame; and the whole Work has steadily maintained the respect which it at first acquired. The present Edition, in three Volumes, contains all the Sermons of Mr. Walker, which have appeared, either during his life or after his death - as well those which were published separately as those which were collected in volumes. Though there were neither striking incidents, nor much variety, in the life of the Author, the following facts will not be unacceptable to his friends. He was born in Canongate, where his father was minister, in 1716. He received a regular education at the University of Edinburgh. Happening to reside for a few months in 1737 with a clergyman in Galloway, he was licensed to preach the gospel by the Presbytery of Kircudbright. In 1738, in consequence of an unanimous call, he was ordained minister of Straiton, within the bounds of the Presbytery of Ayr. He always mentioned this situation with particular satisfaction, and considered the years which he spent at Straiton as among the happiest years of his life. In 1746 he was translated to the Second Charge of South Leith. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Sermons on Doctrinal and Moral Subjects The Revelation (yo God signifies that he has communicated certain truths to men, which they were incapable of discovering by their own pow ers, and'yet which are of the greatest importance to them. These truths are contained in the Bible, which, we therefore conclude, is of divine origin; and as such, is worthy of all acceptation. The fact that this revelation is from God, is sus. Tained by the nature and character of the Fa ther the mission of Christ; the fulfilment of prophecy; the exhibition of miracles the adap tation of Christian truth to our intellectual and moral wants; and the testimony furnished by history. This revelation was not made to us personally. It was communicated to inspired. Men who lived many ages since, on whose ex perience we rely and in whose records we be lieve. Hence, as Divine Revelation was not primarily given to us, we receive it through men who were raised up for the purpose of establish ing it in the world, for the instruction of all people.
