Since 1861 when the US Congress approved the concept of a Medal of Honor for combat valor, 3,457 individuals have received this highest military decoration that the nation can bestow. Nine of those have been Latter-day Saints. The military and personal stories of these LDS recipients are compelling, inspiring, and tragic. The men who appear in this book are tied by two common threads: the Medal of Honor and their Mormon heritage. The purpose of this book is to highlight the valor of a special class of LDS servicemen who served and sacrificed "above and beyond the call of duty." Four of these nine Mormons gave their "last full measure" for their country, never seeing the high award they richly deserved. All four branches of the service are represented: five were Army (one was a pilot with the Army Air Forces during WWII), two Navy, and one each of the Marine Corps and Air Force. Four were military professionals who made the service their careers; five were not career-minded; three died at an early age and never married. This book captures these harrowing historical narratives from personal accounts. Praise for Saints of Valor: "In this book about LDS recipients of our nation's greatest honor-the Medal of Honor-Sherman Fleek has captured both the essence of their heroic deeds and the spirit that motivated them. I love the precision of his storytelling, the meticulous attention to detail, and the unblinking commitment to tell the story as it really happened. It is the work of both a great historian and a great writer."-Jerry Borrowman, best-selling author of military biography and fiction "Sherman Fleek brings to life the Saints who demonstrated absolutely extraordinary heroism, conspicuous gallantry and valor in action-true American heroes who were willing to do what was necessary, even if it meant laying down their lives for their friends."-Lieutenant Colonel Marc "Dewey" Boberg, U. S. Army; Professor and Chair, Department of Military Science, Brigham Young University

This fascinating and inspiring book offers us a new look at the saints. From the ancient martyrs to the sixteenth-century mystics to the modern-day missionaries, Anne Gordon profiles some of the real-life men and women who became God’s human representatives on Earth—and whose moving stories of courage and determination, unconditional love and self-sacrifice still speak to us today. Discover the moral strength of Saint Maximilian Kolbe, “the apostle of Auschwitz,” whose last selfless act of humanity provided a beacon of hope for the world in a time of darkness; the compassion of Mother Frances Cabrini, whose faith, persistence, and gentle humor helped build sixty-seven charitable institutions; and the wisdom of Saint Anthony, the desert saint whose life was a testament to the healing power of silence, solitude, and prayer. To help readers become closer to these heavenly intermediaries, uplifting prayers accompany the profile of each saint. Discover, too, true stories of everyday people whose lives have been touched—and whose prayers have been answered—with the help of the saints. Portraying the saints in their very human forms, Gordon shows how little different they are from ordinary people who also act out of kindness and concern for others. Whether you seek comfort in troubled times or a new sense of purpose in your life, their shining examples can illuminate your path and lead you to a life lived more fully, genuinely, and joyfully than you’ve ever imagined.

Saints both young and bold, The tales of these saints are told here, along with those of many others who, although young, have joined the ranks of the greatest saints: some by dying for their faith, many more by living for it. Their lives of great and simple virtue remind us that "valor does not wait on years," nor does holiness. To live in the love of God, in absolute obedience to His commandments, to practice the noblest Christian virtues, and even to offer our life in sacrifice - we don't have to be grown up.

The lives of the saints who helped build the Catholic Church in the United States--Frances Cabrini, Isaac Jogues, John Neumann, Elizabeth Ann Seton, and Damien de Veuster, among others--are marked by strength, courage, determination, and sanctity. But as this thoughtful and engaging book points out, these saints also could be foolhardy, obstinate, stubborn, and dismissive. In other words, they were a lot like everyone, with a mixture of different qualities and characteristics. What makes the stories of the thirteen men and women in Fearless so compelling is that a distinctly American way of holiness begins to emerge from their lives and their work. These were people who walked the streets of New York, Philadelphia, Baltimore, New Orleans, and Denver. They traveled along California' s coast and into the Southwest, penetrated the heartland of Indiana and Missouri, and reached out into the territorial islands of the United States. Captivating illustrations for each saint highlight the depth of their souls, and give readers an idea of the strong characteristics exemplified by these men and women. Fearless will bring the reader through the history of the Catholic Church in America in an intimate and personal way, with the stories of the saints and blessed who helped Christianity become part of this country' s fabric. These men and women did not set out to be saints, only to live out the Gospel as they best knew how. They followed their hearts and God' s will to build a better place for the people of the New World.

The Medal of Honor may be America’s highest military decoration, but all Medals of Honor are not created equal. The medal has in fact consisted of several distinct decorations at various times and has involved a number of competing statutes and policies that rewarded different types of heroism. In this book, the first comprehensive look at the medal’s historical, legal, and policy underpinnings, Dwight S. Mears charts the complex evolution of these developments and differences over time. The Medal of Honor has had different qualification thresholds at different times, and indeed three separate versions—one for the army and two for the navy—existed contemporaneously between World Wars I and II. Mears traces these versions back to the medal’s inception during the Civil War and continues through the ongoing wars in Iraq and Afghanistan—along the way describing representative medal actions for all major conflicts and services as well as legislative and policy changes contemporary to each period. He gives particular attention to retroactive army awards for the Civil War; World War I legislation that modernized and expanded the army’s statutory award authorization; the navy’s grappling with both a combat and noncombat Medal of Honor through much of the twentieth century; the Vietnam-era act that ended noncombat awards and largely standardized the Medal of Honor among all services; and the perceived decline of Medals of Honor awarded in the ongoing Global War on Terror. Mears also explores the tradition of awards via legislative bills of relief; extralegislative awards; administrative routes to awards through Boards of Correction of Military Records; restoration of awards previously revoked by the army in 1917; judicial review of military actions in federal court; and legislative actions intended to atone for historical discrimination against ethnic minorities. Unprecedented in scope and depth, his work is sure to be the definitive resource on America’s highest military honor.
