The Regional Action Plan on Healthy Ageing in the Western Pacific aims to support Member States to improve the health and well-being of older populations in the Region so that they thrive and contribute in society. The Plan is guided by a multisectoral, future-oriented and lifelong approach that adopts an equity lens and encourages the use of existing assets to the extent possible. The Plan outlines five objectives for achieving the vision of healthy ageing in the Western Pacific Region. They can be broadly categorized as objectives to enable social return (Objective 1), objectives to support healthy ageing (Objectives 2-4), and objectives to enhance research, monitoring and evaluation (Objective 5).
The United Nations Madrid International Plan of Action on Ageing (MIPAA) offers a bold new agenda for handling the issue of ageing in the 21st century. It focuses on three priority areas: older persons and development; advancing health and well-being into old age; and ensuring enabling and supportive environments. This book brings together global perspectives on the MIPAA and focusses on and assesses the success and failures of governments to implement its recommendations. Despite its pivotal importance in international ageing policy, the MIPAA has been relatively neglected by academics in their writings and studies. This book mitigates this analytical and empirical cavity. There is serious concern about the impact of the changing climate. The WHO Regional Office for the Western Pacific has taken the initiative in addressing health issues related to climate change but further action is needed to support efforts to confront climate change in Member States and in various sectors. Health must be mainstreamed into efforts to address climate change and action must be coordinated and integrated across national boundaries and in all sectors. This report synthesizes information and approaches on climate change and health pertinent to Member States in the Western Pacific Region. It also examines efforts and initiatives by various experts and stakeholders with an in-depth look at experiences in seven Member States that reflect the diversity of the Region.
