Wegen des Andrangs fand Georges Verhandlung im Mehrzweckraum der High School statt. Es roch nach abgestandenem Schweiß und Leder. Er ging einige Stufen zur Bühne hinauf, die Hand des Gerichtsdieners auf seinem Ellbogen, und nahm seinen Platz am Tisch des Angeklagten ein. Georges Anwalt sah ihn emotionslos an, als er vom Gericht ernannt wurde. Er war bereit, seine Arbeit zu tun, aber sein Job verlangte nicht, dass er seinen Mandanten bevorzugte. Er sagte nur: „Stehen Sie auf. Der Richter kommt herein.“ George stand auf und lehnte sich auf den Tisch, während der Gerichtsdiener seinen Ruf sang und der Kaplan einige Verse aus dem Matthäusevangelium vorlas. Er hörte nicht zu. Der Bibelvers kam zu spät, um ihm zu helfen, und außerdem tat es ihm weh. Als die Wachen ihn festnahmen, waren sie nicht gerade sanft gewesen. Es waren fünf von ihnen. Sie gehörten zum Werkssicherheitsdienst und hatten keine Waffen. Sie brauchten auch keine. George hatte nach den ersten paar Augenblicken keinen Widerstand geleistet – das heißt, er hielt an, sobald er anhalten konnte –, aber die Polizei hielt nicht an. Daran konnte er sich noch sehr gut erinnern. Er erinnerte sich an den Schlagstock auf die Kopfseite, der sein Ohr zerquetscht und angeschwollen zurückließ, er erinnerte sich an den Tritt in den Bauch, der das Gehen noch immer schmerzhaft machte. Er erinnerte sich sogar an die Reihe von Schlägen auf den Schädel, die ihn bewusstlos gemacht hatten. An die Prellungen an seinem linken Arm und Brustkorb konnte er sich allerdings nicht erinnern. Offenbar war der Wachmann wütend genug gewesen, ihn weiter zu überwältigen, als er bereits bewusstlos war. George machte ihnen keine Vorwürfe. Er nahm an, dass er dasselbe getan hätte. Der Richter unterhielt sich lange mit der Gerichtsstenographin, offenbar über etwas, das am Abend zuvor im Union House passiert war. George kannte Richter Luther flüchtig. Er erwartete keinen fairen Prozess. Im November zuvor hatte der Richter selbst, als er besessen war, den Sender des ihm gehörenden städtischen Radiosenders zertrümmert und das Gebäude, in dem er sich befand, in Brand gesteckt. Sein Schwiegersohn war bei dem Feuer ums Leben gekommen. Lachend winkte der Richter dem Reporter zurück auf seinen Platz und blickte sich im Gerichtssaal um. Sein Blick berührte George leicht, wie das leichte Zucken der herabhängenden Schnüre vor einem Eisenbahntunnel. Die Berührung enthielt dieselbe Warnung. Was George bevorstand, war Zerstörung. „Verlesen Sie die Anklage“, befahl Richter Luther. Er sprach sehr laut. Es waren mehr als fünfhundert Personen im Saal; der Richter wollte nicht, dass einer von ihnen ein Wort verpasste. Der Gerichtsdiener befahl George aufzustehen und teilte ihm mit, dass er angeklagt sei, am 17. Juni letzten Jahres an der minderjährigen Margaret Flershem eine Vergewaltigung begangen zu haben. „Lauter!“, befahl der Richter gereizt. „Ja, Euer Ehren“, sagte der Gerichtsdiener und reckte seine Brust in die Höhe. „Eine Vergewaltigung unter Androhung von Gewalt“, rief er; „und außerdem wurde an der Person der besagten Margaret Flershem eine schwere Körperverletzung begangen –“ George rieb sich die schmerzende Seite und sah zur Decke. Er erinnerte sich an den Blick in Peggy Flershems Augen, als er sich ihr aufdrängte. Sie war erst sechzehn Jahre alt, und damals kannte er noch nicht einmal ihren Namen. Der Gerichtsdiener fuhr dröhnend fort: „– und hat außerdem am selben siebzehnten Tag des vergangenen Juni an der Person von Ingovar Porter eine Körperverletzung mit der Absicht der Vergewaltigung begangen. Das Vorgenannte ist eine Anklage, die von der Grand Jury des Sepulpas County in einer außerordentlichen Sitzung am achtzehnten Tag des vergangenen Juni erhoben wurde.“ Richter Luther wirkte zufrieden, als der Gerichtsdiener sich völlig außer Atem setzte. Während der Richter die Papiere auf seinem Schreibtisch durchsah, regte sich die Menge im Zuschauerraum und murmelte. Ein Kind begann zu weinen.
