Excerpt from Psalms of the Social Life But there is not much of imprecation in the psalms. For the most part they express the moods of men who live a daily life of need and Who mean to help where they can to get God's will done, who feel themselves bound up with other lives and look forward to the correction of all kinds of social evils and the triumph of all right social purposes. It is the study of some of these moods and of these social factors as they appear in these songs of a thousand years that concerns us now. The Psalms in Human Life, since the first pub Hcation of the book in 1903, is itself a striking illustration of the sway which the Hebrew Psalter continues to exercise over the hearts of men. The significance of the Psalms in human experience may probably be realised in various ways. The object of this book has been to bring out the fact by cumulative evidence, drawn from a wide range of history. In this enlarged edition of the original book, the structure and many of the chapters remain unaltered. But some general illustrations have been added, as well as upwards of forty instances of the use of the Psalms either by famous men, or in famous books, or on famous occasions. A mong the most important of these added instances are those associated with the Emperor Julian, St. Severinus of Vienna, St. Brendan and his Voyage, Benvenuto Cellini, Pizarro in Peru, Joseph de Maistre, Thackeray, F. W. H. (Typographical errors above are due to OCR software and don't occur in the book.) Excerpt from Psalms of Life Incline your ear, and come unto Me: hear, and your soul Shall live and I will make an everlasting covenant with you, even the sure mercies Of David. Ome unto Me, and rest, Thou weary heart, distrest With wasting toil, and strivings vain and endless 3 Mourning from day to day For idols passed away Come unto Me 3 I will not leave thee friendless. I watched thy cisterns fail, I saw thee spent and pale, With parched lips, and heart with anguish bursting 3 Then, from the desert sod, Thy cry went up to God 3 Come unto Me 3 I will not leave thee thirsting. Excerpt from The Book of Psalms The present General Editor for the Old Testament in the Cambridge Bible for Schools and Colleges desires to say that, in accordance with the policy of his predecessor the Bishop of Worcester, he does not hold himself responsible for the particular interpreta tions adopted or for the opinions expressed by the editors of the several Books, nor has he endeavoured to bring them into agreement withlone another. It is inevitable that there should be differences of opinion in regard to many questions of criticism and interpretation, and it seems-best that these differences should find free expression in different volumes. He has endeavoured to secure, as far as possible, that the general scope and character of the series should be observed, and that views which have a reasonable claim to consideration should not be ignored, but he has felt it best that the final responsibility should, in general, rest with the individual contributors. Excerpt from Heart Messages From the Psalms The Psalms have not been at fault. Folks have not communed with them as they are wont to do with later poets. Accustomed to the poetical forms of the last three hundred years, men have often failed to catch the appeal of these lays of antiquity, sung by Hebrews long since dead. Yet in the upheaval of thought and social structure now going on men are turning in every direction for some mes sage for life. Where better seek it than in the great songs of Israel? In an hour like ours it may be that fellowship can be established between those who have lived and have sung of God, and ourselves who need him so sorely. The message of the poet knows neither time, place, nor age. It is marked by a universal characteristic which sets vibrating heart-chords the world over. Translate it from language to language, and it finds a response, if it really is poetry and not merely verse. For poetry sings of the universal experiences of the race, its griefs and joys, its disappointments and aspirations, its loves, its hates, its hopes. It is a soul singing itself out into other souls. The psalmists were poets. So well did they sing that we listen back through the ages, that we may not lose a note. They did not write in rime, but with vigorous terseness and a remarkable power of condensation they put their poetry into rhythm with a balanced symmetry of form and sense. Poetasters and the erudite rejoice in the details of form and structure of these songs of Israel. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The Psalm of Psalms, Vol. 3: Being an Exposition of the Twenty-Third Psalm The Decalogue, the Aaronic Blessing and the Twenty-third Psalm in the Old Testament, and the Beatitudes, the Lord's Prayer and the Apostolic Benediction in the New, with perhaps two or three other passages of similar calibre, are the best-known portions of Holy Writ. They were learned by us at a mother's knee, or at least from our earliest instructors; and they are all of sufficient substance to stand constant repetition, as solid gold is only brightened by frequent rubbing. To generations and centuries of men such scriptures have ministered "doctrine, reproof, correction, instruction in righteousness"; and, though they are the earliest efforts of memory, they will reward the maturest ponderings of the human mind. Excerpt from The Psalms, Vol. 3: Translated and Explained After propounding as his theme the mercy and justice of the Lord, v. 1, the Psalmist announces his determination to be blameless in his own walk, vs. 2 - 4, and so to exercise his power over others as to favour the godly and drive out the wicked, vs. 5 - 8. 1. By David. A Psalm. Mercy and judgment will I sing; to thee, Jehovah, will I play (or make music.) As such a declaration of a present purpose in the Psalms is always followed by its execution, the older interpreters suppose mercy and judgment to be those which David meant to practise, as he states more fully in the remainder of the psalm. But besides that he says nothing in what follows of his mercy, there is no usage of the Psalms more settled than that mercy and justice are combined to denote divine not human attributes, and that to sing and make music to Jehovah never means to praise something else in an address to him, but always to sing praises to himself. See above, Ps. ix. 12 (11.) xiii. 6 (5.) xviii. 50 (49.) xxx. 5 (4.) 13 (12.) xxxiii. 2. lxviii. 5 (4.) lxxi. 22, 23, in all which cases the form of expression seems to be derived from Judg. v. 3.
