Excerpt: ...from Scotland to Ulster in North Ireland on the part of certain members of the family who were good Covenanters and who preferred exile rather than conform to the religious dictates of King James I. The family found that also in Ireland their religious faith was a source of unpopularity among their Catholic neighbors. Finally, this situation, combined with the economic prospects in America, led to the consideration of a home beyond the Atlantic. The ancestor of the branch of the family that is responsible for the publication of the family's history is supposed to have emigrated to America in 1770. He remained here two years ' and then returned to Ireland with the well-matured plan of 'bringing over to the New World a colony of workmen and their families and establishing here a factory for the manufacture of cloth. While organizing his colony, he met a pretty, young Irish girl who was visiting in Belfast and for whom her parents had already arranged a marriage with an Irish lord. "The best laid schemes 0' mice and men gang aft agley." Then as now, the little god of romance mocked at the plans of parental origin. The young woman in question met the manly young Scot, a mutual admiration sprang up which culminated in elopement and marriage. The life story of this bride of fourteen years is well-known and is a remarkable one. She lived to an advanced old age and for some years before her death resided with the family of her youngest son, one of whose daughters is still living (1921). From this source and from the diary of the young husband the details of the voyage to America are known. It was a trying voyage of fourteen weeks in which many of the passengers and the crew perished from a plague that broke out...
