Paul luard's poetry is concerned with sexual desire and the desire for social change. A central participant in Dada and in the Surrealist movement, luard joined the French Communist Party and worked actively in the Resistance in Nazi-occupied Paris. The name of Francis Poulenc (1899-1963) was first brought to prominence in the 1920s as a member of Les Six, a group of young French composers encouraged by Satie and Cocteau. His subsequent fame spread well beyond France, and he is coming to be regarded as one of this century's most significant composers. "Paul Celan (1920-1970), one of the most important and challenging poets in post-war Europe, was also a prolific and highly idiosyncratic translator.
