A host of books and films in recent years have documented the dangers of our current food system, from chemical runoff to soaring rates of diet-related illness to inhumane treatment of workers and animals. But advice on what to do about it largely begins and ends with the admonition to "eat local or "eat organic." Fair Food is an enlightening and inspiring guide to changing not only what we eat, but how food is grown, packaged, delivered, marketed, and sold. Oran B. Hesterman shows how our system's dysfunctions are unintended consequences of our emphasis on efficiency, centralization, higher yields, profit, and convenience -- and defines the new principles, as well as the concrete steps, necessary to restructuring it. Along the way, he introduces people and organizations across the country who are already doing this work in a number of creative ways, from bringing fresh food to inner cities to fighting for farm workers' rights to putting cows back on the pastures where they belong. He provides a wealth of practical information for readers who want to get more involved.

Abstract: A description of a 3-day health fair (HEalth Works '79) sponsored by the Department of Health and Human Services includes reactions and comments from participants and observers regarding the success of the fair. The fair was designed to increase awareness and understanding of health promotion among health professionals and the public, to expand the concept of the health fair beyond the traditional emphasis on health screening, to attract media attention to the health promotion and disease prevention, and to encourage individuals to focus on health rather than illness. The fair was intended as a prototype for communities planning similar events. An appendix lists exhibits present at HEalth Works '79. (ds).

This powerful call to arms offers a realistic vision for getting locally produced, healthy food onto everyone’s table, “[blending] a passion for sustainable living with compassion for the poor” (Dr. Jane Goodall) In Closing the Food Gap, food activist and journalist Mark Winne poses questions too often overlooked in our current conversations around food: What about those people who are not financially able to make conscientious choices about where and how to get food? And in a time of rising rates of both diabetes and obesity, what can we do to make healthier foods available for everyone? To address these questions, Winne tells the story of how America’s food gap has widened since the 1960s, when domestic poverty was “rediscovered,” and how communities have responded with a slew of strategies and methods to narrow the gap, including community gardens, food banks, and farmers’ markets. The story, however, is not only about hunger in the land of plenty and the organized efforts to reduce it; it is also about doing that work against a backdrop of ever-growing American food affluence and gastronomical expectations. With the popularity of Whole Foods and increasingly common community-supported agriculture (CSA), wherein subscribers pay a farm so they can have fresh produce regularly, the demand for fresh food is rising in one population as fast as rates of obesity and diabetes are rising in another. Over the last three decades, Winne has found a way to connect impoverished communities experiencing these health problems with the benefits of CSAs and farmers’ markets; in Closing the Food Gap, he explains how he came to his conclusions. With tragically comic stories from his many years running a model food organization, the Hartford Food System in Connecticut, alongside fascinating profiles of activists and organizations in communities across the country, Winne addresses head-on the struggles to improve food access for all of us, regardless of income level.

Abstract: The final reports on the 1983-84 Concerned Parents for Head Start Health and Nutrition Promotion Initiative, a program funded by the Department of Health and Human Services, Region 11 New York, consists of separate reports from the Home Economics Department, New Jersey Cooperative Extension Service, Cook College, the Pilot Parent Nutrition Training Project, and the Physical/Fitness-Nutrition Education segment of the project. The reports cover the purposes, rational, approach, and findings of the project. The model implemented in this pilot effort for identifying key parents to be trained to extend their knowledge to others proved to be effective, and worthy of duplication. Of the 7 parents completing the training program, 6 have been involved as volunteers in nutrition education programs. Many family units enrolled in the Physical/Fitness-Nutrition Education Class and were enthusiastic about it, and many clients expressed the desire that the classes continue, as well as responding with comments on the positive effects of the physical and mental health of the program.
