This book is a story of how two teachers gave twenty students recognition for being the cause of their learning, for making the choice to learn for themselves, for being independent, capable, responsible, and powerful. It is a day-by-day description of a revolutionary five-day orientation that happened each year at the Mobile Open Classroom (MOBOC) in Los Angeles from 1971 to 1983. It is a true story of a real school (not a technical lesson plan), which (1) demonstrates timeless MOBOC concepts in action, (2) educates the reader in respectful and motivating behaviors toward middle schoolers, and (3) creates both a longing for this kind of success with teens and a sense of urgency for educational reform. It is a book for parents, educators, and activists, and extraordinarily relevant to public education today. The story opens with Chris, a student who has been kicked out of five schools, and it follows him as he is transformed by being given his personal power to learn. Like most students, those in this story believed that learning was demanded by someone else - a parent, a teacher, or some other external authority. They were not "learning for themselves," but rather for those others or for the grades. At the end of each year MOBOC students were tested on the same battery of tests used by schools across Los Angeles, and they met or exceeded the highest scores of all other schools, dispelling the fear that such a radical departure from traditional schooling and teaching will result in irresponsible behavior and low grades. In this book, Craig McEwen, MOBOC's head teacher and long time director, lays out the secrets of his pedagogic techniques. In an easy to read series of stories, he reveals how MOBOC got its students to take on responsibility for their own education while not falling into the "anything goes" pitfalls of free choice schools.

Originally published in 1974, this volume presents viable alternatives to traditional attitudes and practices in environmental design and education. It contains 29 selections that reflect the thought and actions of leaders from many diverse disciplines and professions. Architects, landscape architects, urban planners, teachers and administrators, psychologists and social theorists address themselves to controversial and important issues facing our post-industrial society. The range of subjects explored in the volume is far-reaching: Environmental education in which the art of planning and designing itself becomes the curriculum Advocacy planning and community participation in both educational and design decision making Alternative educational institutions, ranging from community-centered schools and mobile schools to non-school learning networks that distribute the learning activity throughout the fabric of the city and the lifetime of the learner New developments in systematic design methods and evaluation research that promise to make the design process more public and responsive to the user-client

In the contemporary context of increasing inequality and various forms of segregation, this volume analyzes the transition to neoliberal politics in Santiago de Chile. Using an innovative methodological approach that combines georeferenced data and multi-stage cluster analysis, Méndez and Gayo study the old and new mechanisms of social reproduction among the upper middle class. In so doing, they not only capture the interconnections between macro- and microsocial dimensions such as urban dynamics, schooling demands, cultural repertoires and socio-spatial trajectories, but also offer a detailed account of elite formation, intergenerational accumulation, and economic, cultural, and social inheritance dynamics.

You can use this book to design a house for yourself with your family; you can use it to work with your neighbors to improve your town and neighborhood; you can use it to design an office, or a workshop, or a public building. And you can use it to guide you in the actual process of construction. After a ten-year silence, Christopher Alexander and his colleagues at the Center for Environmental Structure are now publishing a major statement in the form of three books which will, in their words, "lay the basis for an entirely new approach to architecture, building and planning, which will we hope replace existing ideas and practices entirely." The three books are The Timeless Way of Building, The Oregon Experiment, and this book, A Pattern Language. At the core of these books is the idea that people should design for themselves their own houses, streets, and communities. This idea may be radical (it implies a radical transformation of the architectural profession) but it comes simply from the observation that most of the wonderful places of the world were not made by architects but by the people. At the core of the books, too, is the point that in designing their environments people always rely on certain "languages," which, like the languages we speak, allow them to articulate and communicate an infinite variety of designs within a forma system which gives them coherence. This book provides a language of this kind. It will enable a person to make a design for almost any kind of building, or any part of the built environment. "Patterns," the units of this language, are answers to design problems (How high should a window sill be? How many stories should a building have? How much space in a neighborhood should be devoted to grass and trees?). More than 250 of the patterns in this pattern language are given: each consists of a problem statement, a discussion of the problem with an illustration, and a solution. As the authors say in their introduction, many of the patterns are archetypal, so deeply rooted in the nature of things that it seemly likely that they will be a part of human nature, and human action, as much in five hundred years as they are today.

This book offers the first comprehensive coverage of microwave medical imaging, with a special focus on the development of novel devices and methods for different applications in both the diagnosis and treatment of various diseases. Upon introducing the fundamentals of electromagnetic imaging, it guides the readers to their use in practice by providing extensive information on the corresponding measurement and testing techniques. In turn, it discusses current challenges in data processing and analysis, presenting effective, novel solutions, developed by different research groups. It also describes state-of-the-art medical devices, which were designed for specific applications, such as brain stroke monitoring, lymph node diagnosis, image-guided hyperthermia, and chemotherapy response monitoring. The chapters, which report on the results of the EU-funded project EMERALD (ElectroMagnetic imaging for a novel genERation of medicAL Devices) are written by leading European engineering groups in electromagnetic medical imaging, whose coordinated action is expected to accelerate the translation of this technology “from research bench to patient bedside”. All in all, this book offers an authoritative guide to microwave imaging, with a special focus on medical imaging, for electrical and biomedical engineers, and applied physicists and mathematicians. It is also intended to inform medical doctors and imaging technicians on the state-of-the-art in non-invasive imaging technologies, at the purpose of inspiring and fostering the translation of research into clinical prototypes, by promoting a stronger collaboration between academic institutions, industrial partners, hospitals, and university medical centers.

This book provides a thorough overview of cutting-edge research on electronics applications relevant to industry, the environment, and society at large. It covers a broad spectrum of application domains, from automotive to space and from health to security, while devoting special attention to the use of embedded devices and sensors for imaging, communication and control. The book is based on the 2022 ApplePies Conference, held in Genoa, Italy in September 2022, which brought together researchers and stakeholders to consider the most significant current trends in the field of applied electronics and to debate visions for the future. Areas addressed by the conference included information communication technology; biotechnology and biomedical imaging; space; secure, clean and efficient energy; the environment; and smart, green and integrated transport. As electronics technology continues to develop apace, constantly meeting previously unthinkable targets, further attention needs to be directed toward the electronics applications and the development of systems that facilitate human activities. This book, written by industrial and academic professionals, represents a valuable contribution in this endeavor.
