Excerpt from Manual of Human Histology, Vol. 1 Medicine has reached a point, at which Microscopical Anatomy appears to constitute its foundation, quite as much as the Anatomy of the Organs and Systems and when a profound study of Physiology and Pathological Anatomy is impossible, without an accurate acquaintance also, with the most minute structural conditions. It seems, therefore, to be the task of the cultivators of this branch of science, to communicate the results of their researches, not only to their fellow inquirers, and to those who have, in other ways, gone more deeply into medical science, but to all who are devoted to the study of Man in general, and especially to render them easily available by students and practitioners. The attainment of this object is sought, in the present work, by giving a View, as condensed as possible, of the relations of the elementary parts of the body, and of the more intimate structure of the organs. In the execution of this plan, with the exception of some important, but still doubtful questions, all polemical disquisition is avoided, and the History of the Science. Excerpt from A Manual of Histology For some years past there has been a general demand among the members of our profession for a manual of Histol ogy, summarizing, in concise and plain language, our present knowledge in this fundamental branch of medicine. It is true many books have been written on the subject, but their great brevity, on the one hand, or an unnecessary diffuseness on the other, have prevented them from meeting with acceptance at the hands of physicians and students. In the one class belong the little handbooks of Rutherford and Schaefer, which have done much to simplify and therefore popularize histology, but they were intended for beginners, and especially students doing class-work under the laboratory system now so much in vogue. But both physician and student need something of wider scope, and they have been compelled to turn to Klein Smith, Stricker, or Frey, though no one of these excellent works is thoroughly adapted to their wants. Apart from the expense of the two former, they all are deficient in matters relating to human histology. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Manual of Human and Comparative Histology Histology, Vol. 3 The Science of Histology rests on more numerous and more exact Observations than any other department of knowledge. The microscope effects the enlargement of the image falling upon the retina, and by thus diminishing the extent of surface that can be examined at once, we gain proportionately in sharpness. Constant practice enables us to raise the acuteness Of our perception of luminous rays to an extraordinary degree. We place ourselves in a convenient position; we put away from us all extraneous disturbing impressions on our senses, and even concentrate the sensation of light upon one eye. Nay, more, we even endeavour to save this organ every secondary or subsidiary effort, neither permitting it to roll nor allowing any accommodation to be effected. We take, so to speak, the eyeball into our very hands, we accommodate it by a screw, and turn it about by means of a mechanical stage. Excerpt from Manual of Human and Comparative Histology, Vol. 2 The Translator desires to take this opportunity of thanking Dr. J. F. Payne and Dr. Broadbent for the kind aid they have given him in revising the proof-sheets of his translation of Professor Meynert's difficult essay on the Structure of the Brain in Mammals, contained in this Volume. Without their assistance many passages that are now, he trusts, sufficiently intelligible, would have remained almost hopelessly obscure. In the very full and careful review of the First Volume of this book, that appeared in the 121st number of the American Journal of Medical Sciences, attention was called to an interpolation on p.91. It may just be stated that this was a manuscript note, forwarded by Professor Stricker with a request that it might be here inserted. An important error occurs in Vol I., p. 277, line 6, in the substitution of the word "former" for "latter." It should read To the latter belong the veins etc. The translation of the Third Volume is nearly completed, and the first sheets are in the press. Henry Power Great Cumberland Place, London.
