Research on ferroelectricity and ferroelectric materials started in 1920 with the discovery by Valasek that the variation of spontaneous polarization in Rochelle salt with sign and magnitude of an applied electric field traced a complete and reproducible hysteresis loop. Activity in the field was sporadic until 1935, when Busch and co-workers announced the observation of similar behavior in potassium dihydrogen phosphate and related compounds. Progress thereafter continued at a modest level with the undertaking of some theoretical as well as further experimental studies. In 1944, von Hippel and co-workers discovered ferroelectricity in barium titanate. The technological importance of ceramic barium titanate and other perovskites led to an upsurge of interest, with many new ferroelectrics being identified in the following decade. By 1967, about 2000 papers on various aspects of ferroelectricity had been published. The bulk of this widely dispersed literature was concerned with the experimental measurement of dielectric, crystallographic, thermal, electromechanical, elastic, optical, and magnetic properties. A critical and excellently organized cpmpilation based on these data appeared in 1969 with the publica tion of Landolt-Bornstein, Volume 111/3. This superb tabulation gave instant access to the results in the literature on nearly 450 pure substances and solid solutions of ferroelectric and antiferroelectric materials. Continuing interest in ferroelectrics, spurred by the growing importance of electrooptic crystals, resulted in the publication of almost as many additional papers by the end of 1969 as had been surveyed in Landolt-Bornstein.

The nonlinear interaction between two surface acoustic waves can be used in a number of signal processing devices. In this report the principles which underlie this interaction are developed both theoretically and experimentally. In the signal processing devices it is demonstrated that both convolution and fourier transformations can be carried out in real time. In the imaging work it is shown that acoustic surface waves can be used to scan optical images which are projected onto a semiconducting layer of silicon. This work presents an experimental and theoretical study of the interactions between acoustic surface waves on a piezoelectric insulator and charge carriers in a neighboring semiconductor separated by a small airgap; and the application of these phenomena to signal processing and optical imaging. Although the two media are mechanically isolated, the electric field associated with the surface waves penetrate into the semiconductor and interact with its charge carriers. This interaction is nonlinear, and, in the case of two oppositely propagating surface waves, real time convolution is performed. A new theory of the convolution interaction, taking into account the possible presence of a depletion, inversion or accumulation layer at the surface of the semiconductor, resulting from a built-in or applied dc field is presented. Experimental measurements for both n- and p-type Silicon on Lithium Niobate systems are in very good agreement with this theory, and they lead to a novel technique of measurement of the surface state distribution on semiconductors. The silicon on lithium niobate structure used gives rise to one of the largest convolution efficiencies reported to date. Several signal processing applications are presented. They show the versatility of the device which can be employed as a programmable filter or a parametric processor. In addition, the first autocorrelation is demonstrated by cascading two convolvers. The acoustic convolver was adapted for the scanning of optical images.
