Excerpt from Labor Saving at Limestone Quarries Limestone is a raw material essential to many industries. Any serious curtailment in the output would therefore hamper or suspend certain industries, some of which are of great military importance. The unprecedented demand for iron and steel occasioned by the war has developed maximum activity at the blast furnaces in the United States. As limestone is required for smelting the great bulk of our iron ores, the quarrying of blast - furnace ux is an industry essential to the successful prosecution of war. The heavy demand for fluxing limestone, combined with an increasing difficulty in ob taining sufficient quarry labor, has resulted in a condition that de mands relief. Hence, the Bureau of Mines is endeavoring to dis seminate whatever information it may possess that will in any way assist quarrymen in their efforts to produce a maximum of rock with a minimum of labor. The purpose of this pamphlet is, therefore, to direct the attention of quarrymen to the most successful and etfi cient labor-saving methods and machines. Although many such are now in successful use, there are few companies that can not in some way modify their methods or equipment so as to conserve labor.
