How do scientists approach science? Scientists, sociologists and philosophers were asked to write on this intriguing problem and to display their results at the International Congress `Einstein Meets Magritte'. The outcome of their effort can be found in this rather unique book, presenting all kinds of different views on science. Quantum mechanics is a discipline which deserves and receives special attention in this book, mainly because it is fascinating and, hence, appeals to the general public. This book not only contains articles on the introductory level, it also provides new insights and bold, even provocative proposals. That way, the reader gets acquainted with `science in the making', sitting in the front row. The contributions have been written for a broad interdisciplinary audience of scholars and students.

Multiphase flows, which can involve compressible or incompressible linear or nonlinear, fluids, Are found in all areas of technology, at all length scales and flow regimes. In spite of their ubiquitousness, however multiphase flow continues to be one of the most challenging areas of computational mechanics and experimental methods, with numerous problems remaining unsolved to date. Because the multiphase flow problems are so complex, advanced computational and experimental methods are often required to solve the equations that describe them. The many hhallenges include modelling nonlinear fluids, modelling and tracking interfaces, dealing with multiple length scales, characterizing phase structures, and treating drop breakup and coalescence. Models must be validated, which requires the use of expensive and difficult experimental techniquess. This book presents contributions on the latest research in these techniques, presented at the sixth in a biennial series of conferences on the subject that begain in 2001. Featured topics include: Bubble and drop dynamics, Flow in porous media, Turbulent flow, Multiphase flow simulation, Image processing, Heat transfer, Interaction of gases, liquids and solids, Interface behaviour, Small scale phenomena, Atomization processes, and Liquid film behaviour.

This is an open access book. Since 1985, held 22 times in different cities all over China, ICFPMCE has now been listed in annual academic activities (non-profit) of the Chinese Society of Theoretical and Applied Mechanics (CSTAM), which has become one of the significant conferences in the field of fluid power and mechatronic control engineering. Under the theme of ‘Green Intelligence, Innovative Development’, ICFPMCE 2022 aims to provide a platform for the participants who have been working in the fields of Fluid mechanics, hydraulic and electrical engineering. In addition to keynote speeches and technical sessions to be hosted by famous experts over the world, the conference will organize a number of mini-symposia with themes of sharing the experiences of applying for the National Natural Science Foundation of China, dialogues between editors-in-chief of the journals and young scholars, experts and entrepreneurs, as well as innovative technology exhibition etc., in order to highlight the significant subjects and trends in the field.

Very small particles are able to show astonishing properties. For example, gold atoms can be combined like strings of pearls, while nanoparticles can form one-, two- and three-dimensional layers. These assemblies can be used, for instance, as semiconductors, but other electronic as well as optical properties are possible. An introduction to the booming field of "nanoworld" or "nanoscience", from fundamental principles to their use in novel applications. With its clear structure and comprehensive coverage, backed by numerous examples from recent literature, this is a prime reference for chemists and materials scientists working with and developing nanoparticle systems. A bestselling title in its second edition. A must-have reference for chemists and materials scientists.

In 2003 the German Research Foundation established a new priority programme on the subject of “Imaging Measurement Methods for Flow Analysis” (SPP 1147). This research programme was based on the fact that experimental ?ow analysis, in addition to theory and numerics, has always played a predominant part both in ?ow research and in other areas of industrial practice. At the time, however, c- parisons with numerical tools (such as Computational Fluid Dynamics), which were increasingly used in research and practical applications, soon made it clear that there are relatively few experimental procedures which can keep up with state-of-the-art numerical methods in respect of their informative value, e.g. with regard to visu- spatial analysis or the dynamics of ?ow ?elds. The priority programme “Imaging Measurement Methods for Flow Analysis” was to help close this development gap. Hence the project was to focus on the investigation of ef?cient measurement me- ods to analyse complex spatial ?ow ?elds. Speci?c cooperations with computer sciences and especially measurement physics were to advance ?ow measurement techniques to a widely renowned key technology, exceeding the classical ?elds of ?uid mechanics by a long chalk.

While the PSE community continues its focus on understanding, synthesizing, modeling, designing, simulating, analyzing, diagnosing, operating, controlling, managing, and optimizing a host of chemical and related industries using the systems approach, the boundaries of PSE research have expanded considerably over the years. While early PSE research was largely concerned with individual units and plants, the current research spans wide ranges of scales in size (molecules to processing units to plants to global multinational enterprises to global supply chain networks; biological cells to ecological webs) and time (instantaneous molecular interactions to months of plant operation to years of strategic planning). The changes and challenges brought about by increasing globalization and the the common global issues of energy, sustainability, and environment provide the motivation for the theme of PSE2012: Process Systems Engineering and Decision Support for the Flat World. Each theme includes an invited chapter based on the plenary presentation by an eminent academic or industrial researcher Reports on the state-of-the-art advances in the various fields of process systems engineering Addresses common global problems and the research being done to solve them
