In recent decades a dramatic increase in the frequency and intensity of floods has been observed. Of all natural hazards encountered in the world, floods are among the most frequent and costliest in terms of economic losses, and they cause the largest number of deaths. This publication is the result of a bilateral German-Chinese symposium and deals with flood related issues along the Rhine and the Yangtze, the most important rivers in Germany and China. The book covers a wide range of specific as well as broader topics such as vulnerability, flood risk management and mitigation, land use, sustainable development, and watershed ecology. This book will serve as a valuable reference for hydrologists, geographers, regional planners, politicians, engineers, scholars or any other person interested in the field of flood management.

Biodiversity Change and Human Health brings together leading experts from the natural science and social science realms as well as the medical community to explore the explicit linkages between human-driven alterations of biodiversity and documented impacts of those changes on human health. The book utilizes multidisciplinary approaches to explore and address the complex interplay between natural biodiversity and human health and well-being. The five parts examine health trade-offs between competing uses of biodiversity (highlighting synergistic situations in which conservation of natural biodiversity actually promotes human health and well-being); relationships between biodiversity and quality of life that have developed over ecological and evolutionary time; the effects of changing biodiversity on provisioning of ecosystem services, and how they have affected human health; the role of biodiversity in the spread of infectious disease; native biodiversity as a resource for traditional and modern medicine Biodiversity Change and Human Health synthesizes our current understanding and identifies major gaps in knowledge as it places all aspects of biodiversity and health interactions within a common framework. Contributors explore potential points of crossover among disciplines (both in ways of thinking and of specific methodologies) that could ultimately expand opportunities for humans to both live sustainably and enjoy a desirable quality of life.

Bilateral and multilateral trade agreements have been gaining attention and relevance in recent years. For the countries around the Mediterranean basin the most important regional trade agreements involved are the Euro-Med Agreements, which influence their trade flows as they aim to promote regional integration. Based on the theory of applied welfare economics, this study analyses empirically the impacts of different policy scenarios on the agricultural sector of Mediterranean countries by using an extended and modified version of the trade policy model AGRISIM. The results show that trade liberalisation, either multilateral or bilateral, would be beneficial for the Mediterranean agricultural markets due to positive welfare effects and should be considered by policy makers.

This volume brings together views on the nexus and the conflicts between transformation of states and societies and transnationalization processes in politics, economy, and culture. Thematic articles and case studies deal with conditioned nations/states in Latin America, Eastern Europe, and the former Soviet Union. These nations/states are, on the one hand, subjected to transnational institutions, models, and forces and cannot fall back on the model of the classic nation state. On the other hand, the issues traditionally linked to the nation state as a polity - sovereignty, national economy, and identity - are still salient, as they serve to describe and evaluate the consequences of transnationalization. The volume addresses those processes as imminently political ones and poses the question of a transnational polity.

This publication presents a shift in the People's Republic of China from flood control depending on structural measures to integrated flood management using both structural and non-structural measures. The core of the new concept of integrated flood management is flood risk management. Flood risk management is based on an analysis of flood hazard, exposure to flood hazard, and vulnerability of people and property to danger. It is recommended that people learn to live with flood risks, gaining and promoting a clear understanding of flood risks, quantifying and modifying the flood hazard, regulating exposure to the hazard, and reducing their vulnerability to danger.
