Provided here is an up to date account of how high pressures affect cellularprocesses in microorganisms and in eukaryotic cells. Topics include membranetransport, cell activation, the excitable properties of cells, muscular contraction, with particular emphasis on cardiac muscle, and the role of pressure in the physiology of cartilage in load bearing joints. Additionally there are thorough reviews of the effects of pressure on fish and on the central nervous system of mammals, including man.

This volume is one of those published from the proceedings of the invited lectures to the First International Congress of Comparative Physiology and Biochemistry I organized at Liege (Belgium) in August 1984 under the auspices of the Section of Comparative Physiology and Biochemistry of the International Union of Biological Sciences. In a general foreword to these different volumes, it seems to me appropriate to consider briefly what may be the comparative approach. Living organisms, beyond the diversity of their morphological forms, have evolved a widespread range of basic solutions to cope with the different problems, both organismal and environmental, with which they are faced. Soon after the turn of the century, some biologists realized that these solutions can be best comprehended in the frame work of a comparative approach integrating results of physiological and biochemical studies done at the organismic, cellular and molecular levels. The development of this approach amongst both physiologists and biocha~ists remained, however, extremely slow until recently.

Biological systems are regulated by the thermodynamic parameters of pressure and temperature. New analytical and computational methods and various kinds of spectroscopy allow detailed studies of the structure and function of biological systems under extreme conditions, as well as the possibility to explicate the origin and evolution of life. This volume addresses researchers and students exploring the new world of biological systems under extreme environmental conditions.

High pressure biology has matured over the century since the pioneering investigations of A. Certes and P. Regnard on organisms dredged from the deep ocean. Basic work continues on whole organisms, organ systems, cells and subcellular systems and is now benefiting greatly from advances in molecular biology. Applied aspects of the subject include the growing field of hyperbaric medicine, based in large part on past work in diving physiology, and the expanding use of pressure in biological and medical industries including the food industry. The papers in this book derive from the 3rd International Meeting on High Pressure Biology which was designed to bring together a diverse group of investigators with interests ranging from molecular pressure responses to medical applications of hyperbaric oxygen. The book has the following sections: (1) Cellular and Molecular Biology, i.Cellular Responses to Pressure, ii.Molecular Responses to Pressure; (2) Pressure Effects on Animals and Animal Systems, i.Nervous System, ii.Systems Other than the Nervous System; (3) Applications of Pressure Biology, i.Applied Research and Development ii. Toxic and Beneficial Effects of Oxygen
