Testing was completed on the first 2 experimental weldments of 2-in.-thick, commercially pure Ti plate. The 3rd, 4th, and 5th sets of the 2-x 4x 24-in. plates, which were machined to a number of variations of a modified double-V joint design, were welded, radiographed, sectioned, and tested. An optimum modified double-V joint design was decided upon for the machining and welding of the 2-x 15-x 30-in. plates into a 2-x 30-x 30-in. weldment. The best welding techniques developed during the welding of the first 5 experimental weldments were used. The X-ray radiograph of the weldment showed it to be free from porosity, cracks, and other defects capable of detection by this means of non-destructive inspection. (Author).

Procedures for welding 2-inch-thick Ti-alloy plate were developed for 4 alloys: commercially pure titanium, Ti-6Al-4V, Ti-5Al-2.5Sn, and Ti-13V-11Cr-3Al. Commercially available filler wires and experimental filler materials were used make the welds. The properties of the welds were generally as good as or better than those of the base plate. The results show that heavy titanium-alloy plates can be satisfactorily welded provided they are adequately protected from weld contamination and the compositions of the filler wire and base plate are properly controlled. A controlled-atmosphere welding chamber was used to provide protection for the welds in this program. The impact properties of the base plate did not meet the requirements for submarine hulls, but two of the alloys show promise: Ti-6Al-4V and the Ti-5Al-2.5Sn alloys. (Author).

The results of this study indicate that techniques can be developed to produce uncontaminated double-beveled, fillet reinforced welded joints in thick plate alloy titanium using out-of-chamber, manual, all position shielded inertgas, consumable electrode, short circuit welding processes. Further development of these welding techniques is necessary to minimize or eliminate the occurrence of lack of fusion and cold shutting defects in the weldments. It is believed that improved welder skill and an increase in inductance in the power supply may help to overcome these difficulties. (Author).
