Excerpt from Chestnut Culture in the Northeastern United States Castanea is distinguished by its broad spreading habit when grown in the open its long, sharp-pointed, coarsely serrate bright green leaves; and its wealth of creamy-tinted, fragrant catkins, which burst into bloom in midsummer and give color to the landscape long after the apple and cherry trees have scattered their petals to the winds, or the red maples have matured their keys and the elms their samaras. Excerpt from The European and Japanese Chestnuts in the Eastern United States History of the European Chestnut. The European chestnut, which is popularly called the Spanish Chestnut, was introduced into the 1 United States, not for economic purposes, but by individuals who wished to determine its adaptability to their private estates. Nearly all of the varieties now in propagation are descendants from the French Marrons, and the appellation Spanish is an anomaly. New varieties are not being extensively introduced from Europe at present, but many persons have planted the nuts of the best naturalized kinds, like the Paragon, hoping to discover among the variable progeny, seedlings, that are superior to their parents. The earliest history Of the European chestnut, in America, is hidden in obscure book notices, or in the note books of those who were interested in early American agriculture. Excerpt from The Search in Foreign Countries for Blight-Resistant Chestnuts and Related Tree Crops In July, 1924, P. H. Dorsett, long connected with the work of the Office of Foreign Plant Introduction, left for northeastern China, accompanied by his son, James H. Dorsett. The explorations made by Dorsett and Dorsett have resulted in procuring additional chestnut material, including nuts from wild and cultivated trees from the regions north and northeast of Peking. In view of the great interest in substitutes for our native chestnut that may prove able to withstand the blight and be utilized in breed ing work, looking to the supplying of timber, tannin, and food, it has seemed desirable to bring together certain data bearing on the species already introduced or that may be introduced. This seems particularly necessary, inasmuch as there is considerable confusion and some misunderstanding as to the real merits of the introductions heretofore made.
