No book is provoking a more animated discussion among students of the social sciences at the present time than H. G. Wells' Outline of History. The author's task, as he himself sets it, is to tell, "truly and clearly, in one continuous narrative, the whole story of life and mankind so far as it is known today." But while these two volumes are plainly for the general reader rather than for the special student of history, it does not follow that they contain nothing beyond an endless parade of names and dates. Their chief value, indeed, is in the author's interpretation of what he writes about. Events are appraised and men are weighed in the balance as he goes along. Historians in general will not agree with some of these appraisals, nor will they credit Mr. Wells with an approach to infallibility in his judgment of the men who flit across his pages; but his estimates of the relative value of facts and forces can scarcely be brushed aside because they do not command general indorsement. On some matters, unhappily, Mr. Wells has allowed his iconoclastic proclivities to run away with him. Napoleon I, for example, cannot be disposed of as a second-grade "pestilence" because "he killed fewer people than the influenza epidemic of 1918" (II, p. 384); nor will the world believe, so long as it retains its senses, that Napoleon III was " a much more intelligent man" than his uncle (II, p. 438). Even the pinchbeck himself would have rebuked this insinuation. But when all is said, these two stout volumes embody a remarkable achievement. They contain astonishingly few historical inaccuracies of the customary type. The author's advisers, and a competent galaxy of scholars they are, have kept him clear of the pitfalls. The style is terse and forceful. Mr. Wells certainly has the gift of cogent exposition.

Excerpt from An Outline of General History: For the Use of Schools In the Outline of General History, as presented to the public nearly six years ago, the aim was to combine the extreme of brevity with a lively and simple narrative, such as might supply the present need of young scholars, while affording a symmetrical plan for the research of older ones. It was felt that much labor was left to the teacher in filling up the outline thus offered; but the author has had the satisfaction of knowing that the book, in its several editions, has been both ably and successfully used. In the present enlarged edition, much of the needed supplementary matter has been added in the form of notes upon each chapter. The selection from such a wealth of material has of course been a matter of difficulty, and it is not to be supposed that a perfect proportion has been attained. It is hoped, however, that the more practical aim has been measurably reached, - of contributing somewhat to the convenience of teachers and the profit of pupils. References to authorities have been multiplied, and the quotations, though necessarily brief, may serve as guides to a more extensive reading of the works from which they are taken. Excerpt from A Manual of General History: Being an Outline History of the World From the Creation to the Present Time; Fully Illustrated With Maps; For the Use of Academies, High-Schools, and Families This work is designed to supply what the author believes to be a great want among school text-books at the present time – namely, a convenient manual of general history, with the necessary geographical and chronological accompaniments. The plan pursued corresponds with that of the author's popular school histories of the United States, the situation of the different places mentioned in the text being shown on maps, specially prepared for this work. These maps, as far as it was found possible in so elementary a work, also present the progressive changes in the various political divisions of which the history successively treats. In connection with them is given a system of map-questions, by which the pupil's attention is called to the exact location of places just previous to their occurrence in the history. The value of this plan has never been disputed by any teacher or student by whom it has been employed, experience clearly showing, that by associating events with places, both are more permanently impressed on the mind. The questions at the bottom of the pages are chiefly designed to draw attention to single facts, or to very brief statements; those at the end of the sections, called Review Questions, associate facts belonging to the same individual, place, or train of events, and are thus of a topical character.
